AC C @Mon_Alisa 6 hrs ago I found 39 Steps a bit confusing at times—partly from all the rewinding to understand what they were saying—but context is everything. Robert Donat as Hannay is arguably talking cinema’s original “man on the run” and he delivers a great performance. Along with a number of other film firsts, this one gets the credit it’s due with a 4/5 for me. See more Wayne K @WayneKelso Aug 22, 2026 The 39 Steps was made when Hitchcock was regarded as a significant talent but still hadn’t fully hit his grove yet, as he would when the 40s rolled around. Its got some classic Hitchcock twists and turns, with an especially clever one coming in the last few minutes, and I liked Robert Donat’s deer in the headlights performance as the most English Canadian of all time. The shady organisation at it’s core gets forgotten about by large stretches of time, since it seems to be only 2 bumbling detectives who consistently represent it. It’s got some truly contrived moments, such as said detectives loudly discussing classified information in a bar just because no one else is nearby, because I guess eavesdroppers don’t exist in this universe. It can’t ever be considered among Hitch’s best, but there’s certainly flashes of greatness from a filmmaker who would go on to change cinema forever, so its worth a watch for that reason alone. Some comic routines - as he gets handcuffed to a woman , by the bad guys. don't pass it by... this is how a good movie should be See more Stuart B @RT33432491 Jul 22, 2026 I am 81 years of age and consider myself a decent judge of what is a good film. IMHO The 39 Steps is a masterpiece of entertainment, and one of the finest films ever made. Witty, suspensful and beautifully filmed, this is a treat for the eyes. Hitchcock at his finest. It should be compulsory viewing for everyone.8 See more BO S @boknows40 Jun 26, 2026 Suspenseful. Clever, entertaining dialogue. One of my all-time favorites! See more Henry D @Henry_Domke Apr 13, 2026 Fast from the opening scene and consistently entertaining, with not a wasted moment. It even slips into laugh-out-loud humor at times. It’s easy to see how much it shaped the thrillers that followed. Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll are perfectly matched, her cool, quick intelligence and look reminded me a bit of Jean Arthur. Remarkably, despite having seen it three times before, it all felt fresh, we had almost no memory of it. See more Read all reviews
