Critics Consensus

Carrie is a horrifying look at supernatural powers, high school cruelty, and teen angst -- and it brings us one of the most memorable and disturbing prom scenes in history.

Brian De Palma’s depiction of female adolescence is extremely dubious (the opening slow-mo shower scene is beyond icky), but this is a film that fundamentally fears women.

It isn’t explicitly about school shootings and yet it shows you, like no other film I have ever seen, the horrifying wish-fulfilment ecstasy of such horrific acts. De Palma is the only director who could have done it.

Carrie is a terrifying lyrical thriller. The director, Brian De Palma, has mastered a teasing style -- a perverse mixture of comedy and horror and tension.

As heartwrenching and horrifying now as it was in 1976, "Carrie" is deftly crafted, enthrallingly acted, and utterly engrossed in its cautionary themes. Simply put, it’s one of the greatest horror films of all-time.

Carrie may be the first movie that showed that horror and coming-of-age stories are a match made in heaven (or hell, as it may be).

It walks the line between dark comedy, horror, melodrama successfully. The over the top cruelty and humiliation portrayed in the film don’t seem ridiculous... because they represent the inner distorted world that every teen experiences in high school.

Saw there was a new serial on Prime, then spotted the original next to it, thought, "Damn, that was good!" and watched it again instead. I was right. The best of the Stephen King adaptations. DePalma's best movie, despite too-long establishment shots and a weak, anticlimactic ending. Scary, powerful, empathetic. Spacek and Piper blew you away. Travolta made a great asshole. Good casting all around. One of those rare instances where the screenplay was better than the book.

Finally got round to watching the original Carrie and its safe to say that it did not disappoint. Based off the Stephen King novel, the story from start to finish was easy to follow and was gripping all the way till the end. Not sure why there are so many remakes of this classic when the original hit the nail on the head the first try i would highly recommend this movie if you havent watched it before and if you have why not go watch it again because its an amazing movie!!!!
