Critics Consensus

This story of a down-on-his-luck boxer is thoroughly predictable, but Sylvester Stallone's script and stunning performance in the title role brush aside complaints.

Rocky is a threadbare patchwork of old-movie bits, yet it's engaging, and the naive elements are emotionally effective. Go to Full Review

Rocky, Stallone's alter ego, is sufficiently engaging to make one forget, momentarily at least, the script's milk-fed lack of originality. Go to Full Review

Like the movies of Frank Capra, Rocky is a glowing tribute to the human spirit - a chin-up reminder that the decent, little guys of the world often accomplish the impossible if only because they try so hard. Go to Full Review

Ultimately, it was "cinematic comfort food" for a deeply divided nation. Watergate and two assassination attempts on President Gerald Ford were barely in the rearview mirror, and record inflation was within sight on the near horizon. Go to Full Review

The story is simple, and it’s told in a very traditional Hollywood fashion, but it’s entirely about people in which the audience can believe and recognise. Go to Full Review

Steven C Oct 20, 2022 Such a classic. Was able to show this awesome movie to a younger generation and I'm sure they are fans now. Just wished Starlight was showing all of the Rocky movies in theaters. See more Jason R Oct 20, 2022 The single greatest movie in the history of movies. See more Tiernan O @Luminex26 10 hrs ago A movie which is called a classic, and I can see why, but for a first time viewer was a little bit underwhelming. The entire motivational aspect that Rocky is so famous for only really appears in the last 40 minutes, which really carries this movie to the 7/10 rating I've given it. I appreciate the filmmaking, and the beautiful storyline of the underdog, and it's still a good movie that worked with a low budget, but in the end, I was a little bit disappointed, and I think the movie was just maybe half an hour too long. See more Carlos T @RT67858720 20 hrs ago Minha nota: 9/10. See more Aaron D @Aaron106 Sep 30, 2026 A perfect underdog movie. See more Kyle M @RT77296778 Sep 22, 2026 Watching this retrospectively in hindsight of it positionally starting a franchise and the true story surrounding the award-winning screenplay shows autobiographical triumph within its superior thematic integrity sympathizing daily hardships for dreamers, casually carried by Stallone’s breakthrough as a performing storyteller with attempted heart, minus the substandard script directed laidback. Collectively effortless per naturally approached reflects its timeless resonance as its social commentary being realized amid inspirational grasp, which probably led to winning Best Picture. Though the immediate sequels decrease in quality focus, till much later, they organically underlined succeeding themes between fame and loss to legacy with family showcasing growth, while dynamical performances gradually adjust in achievably imbalanced heights under minimal ascendance.
