Even then, the plot feels a little drawn out See more Farah R. @Farah Mar 16, 2026 Alfred Hitchcock’s style is felt throughout, but Shadow of a Doubt is far from the master filmmaker’s best work. The story is intriguing but lacks depth, the characters are compelling but the acting was mediocre, and the resolution came too quickly. As a fan of Hitchcock, I’m glad I watched it but I expected more. See more Wayne K @WayneKelso Mar 8, 2026 Shadow Of A Doubt, a.k.a. Charlie Charlie Charlie, was apparently Hitchcock’s favourite of his own films, but it was one that, to my surprise, I didn’t really connect with. I can’t think of anything the film does that another of his projects didn’t do better. The tension, the camerawork, the characters, the dialogue, all of it felt like it was several shades weaker than it should have been. Joseph Cotton acts far too obviously suspicious for there to be any ambiguity, the family dynamic rarely feels interesting, Joseph & Herbie’s discussions about murder lead to nothing and the climax is abrupt and curiously badly staged. Then there’s just weird details, such as having then 69-year-old Henry Travers be the father of 2 young children. It almost feels blasphemous to say you didn’t like a Hitch film, and while I didn’t outright dislike it, it did leave me feeling empty by the time it was over. See more Stuart T @Omahataylors Jan 11, 2026 It was noisy, some very poor acting, but worst of all is it generally failed to develop any real tension. In this film, he creates an idyllic midwest small town and introduces a sinister, psychotic stranger to what is the all-American family. It just so happens that the stranger is a distant family member. We get so tied into the family that we also feel like family members. The threat from the stranger becomes so great that we are fearful for the protagonist, the daughter of the family. This film was creatively cast, headed by Joseph Cotten and Teresa Wright. The Direction was excellent. Hitchcock used the magic of black and white to create a menacing, threatening environment. This is one of my favorite Hitchcock movies. See more Read all reviews
