Critics Consensus

Rob Roy is an old-fashioned swashbuckler that benefits greatly from fine performances by Liam Neeson, Jessica Lange, and Tim Roth.

Rob Roy has its diversions, but they are unfortunately outweighed by some heavy baggage that contains not enough of substance.

A-

Where Braveheart was a guts-and-glory battlefield hymn to fortitude, Rob Roy is a more personal, more intelligent, and more wrenching exploration of honor, honesty, and loyalty.

Neeson makes a less dashing action hero than did Day-Lewis, but he brings enough gravitas to his role to endow his love for his wife Mary (Lange) and his conflict with Cunningham with real emotional punch.

Involves several of the most riveting examples of onscreen vengeance, to the point that Roy’s historical significance is all but lost to unadorned wrath.

The first point to make about Alan Sharp's script is that it travesties history, bearing only the flimsiest resemblance to the facts of Rob's life... The second point is that it's one of the best screenplays of the last decade.

Brilliant! Michael Caton-Jones did good with this movie. Very well written and brought to screen. Great cinematography and visually stunning. The stellar cast all excels in character. Lots of action, intrigue, drama, suspense, good old revenge, emotion and intrigue. The settings are breathtakingly beautiful. Just about faultless in any regard, epic and classic movie

It's kind of a Braveheart lite, with Liam Neeson kicking butt even back then, and John Hurt and Brian Cox old - even back then. Tim Roth was detestable as the bad guy. Thumbs up.

Incredible movie, excellent writing, very little to no CGI, characters that make you really feel and a great ending. Would venture to say this is a lesser known Masterpiece on par with Titanic, and even Braveheart. Actors that actually make you dislike and like them personally, that’s the mark of excellence.
