Critics Consensus

Leonardo DiCaprio plays dual roles with diminishing returns in The Man in the Iron Mask, a cheesy rendition of the Musketeers' epilogue that bears all the pageantry of Alexandre Dumas' text, but none of its romantic panache.

[There's] just too much great stuff here for this version of the Dumas story to be summarily dismissed. Go to Full Review Mike Clark USA Today Jan 9, 2018

To these nonteen ears and eyes, the kid is no more real in either guise than his phony flowing locks. And the romantic scenes fizzle next to Titanic's steamy roll in a Rolls. Go to Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times Jul 31, 2001

Once all the pieces of the plot were in place, I was at least interested, if not overwhelmed; I could see how, with a rewrite and a better focus, this could have been a film of Braveheart quality instead of basically just a costume swashbuckler. The film, written and directed by Randall Wallace, writer behind the pathetic Braveheart adaptation, does nothing exciting for the picture and can’t command more than a few decent performances. Go to Full Review Felix Vasquez Jr. Cinema Crazed Jun 4, 2020
Long in the tooth and unfocused and wastes its bang up cast. Go to Full Review Brian D. Johnson Maclean's Magazine Oct 30, 2019
As aging musketeers, Jeremy Irons, John Malkovich, Gérard Depardieu and Gabriel Byrne-each sporting a different accent-all look faintly embarrassed, like serious actors stuck performing at a kids' birthday party. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

It had great acting and dialogue, and though cheesy occasionally, it hardly detracts from the wonderful aspects of it. The actors did incredible and the story was very well told. A superb film that deserves to be a classic. See more Kuo Ann L @Leeka Sep 26, 2026 Watched it as a young man when it came out. Heroism, honour, self sacrifice, good vs evil… loved it. It’s a product of the 90’s. You can’t judge it by the same lens of modern movies. See more Mary S @RT31692299 Jun 21, 2026 soapy music, turgid dialogue, and much too much flash in costumes and settings See more Eye C @ECinc Jun 15, 2026 I remember watching this in the theater and I kind of love it… and now no so much. It’s uneven at the beginning is so Hollywood, in a bad way, but slowly became better but not so much. Kudos for the performance of DiCaprio very well done.
