Critics Consensus

Duets suffers from sloppy direction and stretches credibility. Also, the characters are uninteresting and it's hard to care about what happens to them.

In addition to its other shortcomings, Duets is awfully slow in getting going. Go to Full Review Terry Lawson Detroit Free Press Jan 1, 2000
Aside from Duets seeming ridiculously dated, it is seriously tone-deaf. It veers wildly from light pop to social protest to the kind of violent drama that could be played out to a rap track. Go to Full Review Robert Philpot Fort Worth Star-Telegram/DFW.com Jan 1, 2000
Looks a little like an early '70s TV-movie -- a lost, well-meaning artifact about 'looking for America' that you stumbled across during a late-night channel-surf. Go to Full Review Kaleem Aftab The List Apr 16, 2019

As with nights in karaoke bars, where the expectation of the singing standards is low, Duets surprises like the occasional singers who can actually hit a note. Go to Full Review Malcolm L. Johnson Hartford Courant Jun 8, 2018
Besides its dim and sometimes slipshod look, this little ensemble work slides from pretentious flights of philosophizing to touches of smart smut as it surveys the American dream as pursued by various warbling wanderers. Go to Full Review Joe Leydon The Moving Picture Show Jul 19, 2014
A muddled and meandering long-distance road movie that strives to be engagingly offbeat, but more often comes across as annoyingly off-key. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Allen R @AL_SeesALotOfMovies Aug 31, 2025 The characters were not written very likable and so it makes it hard to root for anyone in the movie. See more Tim M @tgmacman Jun 6, 2025 Forget vocal chemistry: the cast of Duets hardly plays off one another whatsoever, content to let this inert dramedy get booed offstage. See more Ian H @Howellsey Apr 20, 2025 Weirdly compelling even if characters are a very random bunch See more Anduin H @RT17599122 Jan 16, 2025 Sure it’s flawed, but this movie always gets me! The karaoke is wonderful - Andre Braugher and Paul Giamatti !!! It’s a fairytale, an odyssey, kind of ridiculous but if you allow yourself to indulge in a healthy dose of suspension of disbelief, you will enjoy yourself thoroughly. Gwyneth Paltrow and Huey Lewis!!! See more Feb 4, 2023 Great feel good movie! Good music! The people that gave a bad rating are freaking idiots!
