Critics Consensus

Ricky Gervais' consistently sharp performance and beautifully dry execution transform this otherwise mainstream comedy into an endearing, funny, and altogether snappy romantic comedy. With ghosts.

I like Gervais but now realise there is only so much I can take at the one sitting.

Ghost Town is both a surprise and a departure: it's genuinely funny and quietly original. It also shows what Gervais can do in the right role.

Writer-director David Koepp is almost too careful a craftsman for his own good, but Gervais and Leoni share a talent for throwing the audience off-balance...

The film’s most successful elements are not spiritual but rather sentimental, as this low-key romantic comedy manages to be at once endearing, funny, and, dare I say, even worthy of a few tears.

Just a light-hearted little comedy that is good but nothing special. Ricky Gervais makes almost anything watchable.

Ghost Town is what happens when a grumpy dentist gets the world’s most annoying afterlife assignment. It’s funny, charming, and somehow makes a guy who hates people become the one person ghosts actually need. Ricky Gervais brings the perfect mix of sarcasm and awkward panic, while the story sneaks in a surprising amount of heart. A sweet little comedy about second chances, unfinished business, and why ignoring ghosts is apparently bad for your social life.

Ghost Town is undeniably cosier than The Office or Extras ... but Gervais's dry-as-a-bone delivery and brilliant comic timing prevent things getting too soppy.

Kinnear plays smarmy well enough and the rest of the cast turn in serviceable performances, but it is Gervais and Leoni who take a patchwork quilt of a romance and make it a comedy worth seeing.
