When 9 (Elijah Wood) springs to life, it finds itself in a post-apocalyptic world where humans no longer exist, and the only signs of life are sentient rag dolls like itself and the machines that hunt them. Though it is the youngest of the group, 9 convinces comrades that the only way to survive against the machines is to stop hiding, go on the offensive, and find out why the machines want to destroy them. As 9 and the group learn, civilization hinges on their success or failure.

By telling a story that could not be filmed in live-action, Acker makes animation the wonderfully unpredictable and visionary art form it should be. Too bad he doesn’t back up his glorious animation with an equally interesting story.

I don't understand why this has such a low rating. Beautiful animation, Time Burton was a great director, Elijah Wood did great. The voice acting was brilliant! 👏 A heart-breaking tear-serving great story!!

Great movie! but it's unfairly underrated :( This is not your typical animated PG-13 movie. It doesn't coddle its audience with fake outs or plot armor. It has high stakes and real unforgiving consequences that you unfortunately don't see enough of now a days. I see a lot of people criticized it for being a story that's been told before. But tell me a story that hasn't? It a silly criticism that shouldn't matter as long as it's told with a lot of heart and soul, and I feel this movie successfully does that! Sure, it's not perfect, but it not as bad as it's rated. It deserves a higher rating!
