Critics Consensus

A clever, offbeat romantic comedy, 500 Days of Summer is refreshingly honest and utterly charming.

This is a film which tries so hard to be fresh and different it loses sight of the bigger picture, is just kind of empty somehow, and rather beefs up the 'rom' and the heartache at the expense of the 'com.'

The principals perform their roles nicely, but there really isn't much for them to do. Undoubtedly, the age gap has influenced my negative response.

What makes this movie so seamless is the spot-on performances of the two lead actors and the very relatable story of what happens when love--and life--happens.

Don’t call this film a romantic comedy, because with that label comes so many bad associations. Instead, call this a slice of romance, with all the potential elation and heartbreak offered therein.

The thing about (500) Days of Summer is that you could switch the leads and not miss a beat. Deschanel and Gordon-Levitt are that good.

The kind of film that comes around every 10 years. A true, funny kind of love story that's not a love story at the same time.

deadass thought they both had mental illnesses, movie lacks substance. A nothing sandwich if you will and summer moving crazy 100% thought she was either dying of cancer or dementia

A charming and bittersweet take on love, expectations, and heartbreak. What I liked most is how it avoids treating romance as a simple happily-ever-after story. The nonlinear storytelling, music, visuals, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel's chemistry give it plenty of personality. Some parts feel a little too stylized, but underneath it is a surprisingly honest look at how differently two people can experience the same relationship.

Takes a pretty relatable navigation of new love and injects some quirk, realism and great music into it. Summer definitely had drawbacks.

The timeline was a bit confusing, however, I just loved the concept of the movie and the actors really made it come to life! Loved Joseph's character.
