Critics Consensus

A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors offers an imaginative and surprisingly satisfying rebound for a franchise already starting to succumb to sequelitis.

Dream Warriors is no doubt in the upper echelon of horror sequels released during the 1980s—not only did it cleverly find a way to bring old and new casts of characters together seamlessly, it also expanded on the original movie’s mythology. Go to Full Review

The end result is a film that, while never quite reaching the quality of Wes Craven’s original work, stands up as a particularly strong sequel – taking up the ingredients of the format and set-up, and remixing them into an entertaining new variation. Go to Full Review

It offers more campy fun than it has any right to deliver, though it's still a far cry from something I'd call "good." Go to Full Review

Jay R Oct 15, 2025 Always a great movie, this theater used a real reel projection of the movie, it was a great experience. See more Jessica C Sep 11, 2025 It was a fun movie that really held up well for the time period. We really enjoyed seeing this again. See more Benjamin W @Code70 5 days ago This was a pretty awesome rebound after the massively disappointing Freddy’s Revenge. It’s just so imaginative, so creative with all of the dream logic and how it adds “powers” and unique abilities to certain individuals in order to fight this evil. Unlike many sequels (especially trilogy-cappers) in horror franchises, it’s attempt to go back to the original and add more lore and layers actually strengthens the writing, both retrospectively and presently within this third film. The practical effects here are fantastic, and I also think this is the best Freddy Krueger has ever been, walking the line between horror and comedy perfectly. I don’t think all of the characters are terribly interesting, and I didn’t like how fast some things played out. Like, some of the death in the third act didn’t feel as impactful as they could’ve, at least for me, because I didn’t feel like I knew the characters enough. But overall, this is dang solid horror sequel. One of the better ones out there. See more Robert P @Superbad Sep 9, 2026 I have seen this movie *2* time and was rooting for the kids to win Regardless I have this Movie a *3.5* star rating... See more Ollie W @RT90619198 Sep 1, 2026 The soundtrack was composed by Angelo Badalamenti, who is a frequent collaborator with David Lynch. Unfortunately what he delivered for this film just adds to its campy unscary vibe. Patricia Arquette is terrible in the lead role. It’s surprising that she went on to have a successful career. It has some very dark themes (a child killer, teenage suicide and self harm and mental illness) yet is unserious and childish. While this film has an age rating of 18, it seems to be aimed primarily at 12 year olds. The film turns Freddy into a comedy act, and he therefore loses any ability to frighten. The non-stop wisecracks and one-liners from Freddy totally ruin any horror vibe. There was an intriguing premise here and some of the stylised surreal OTT kills are entertaining, but there are too many problems with this film and it's far too cheesy to be interesting or good. I do like the theme song by the heavy metal band Dokken though. See more Alex B @AlexBioni Aug 24, 2026 Nightmares and Therapy This is significantly better than the second movie. I really enjoyed the plot. The kids have all experienced Freddy and are brought together at a hospital, where they must work together to stop him. It's a unique concept and an interesting way to expand the story. Robert Englund is great as always, and the effects are fantastic. I love how these movies can get completely insane with their dream sequences and we just accept it because it's Freddy. The human puppet and TV scenes are crazy, and the movie adds some interesting lore to Freddy. I do find it strange that the adults don't believe the kids, even when they're all describing the same person. The self harm angle is interesting too, although you'd think the professionals would realize something was wrong. It isn't as scary as the original, and the middle drags a bit. Still, it's a huge improvement over Part 2, but the original is superior. See more Read all reviews
