Critics Consensus

It has an interesting premise and admirable ambitions, but After.Life fails to deliver enough twists or thrills to sustain its creepy atmosphere.

Proposes a novel scenario, but bogs it down with cliche filmmaking techniques so much, you'll be hoping we all just die and go to heaven; end of story. Go to Full Review

There’s not enough happening to call it a horror movie, not enough drama to feel emotionally engaged, and as a result, there’s little reason to care about how uninvolving the mystery proves to be. Go to Full Review

A horror film, also about alien pretensions, simultaneously disturbing, inexplicable and useless. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Unfortunately, the movie veers in the most predicable, Saw-like direction possible just as the characters are starting to crackle with originality. Go to Full Review

Gerald H May 5 The illusion of a good story holds exactly as long as we believe in her death. At the same moment we get the truth, the whole house of cards crumbles. See more Scott B @sburke802 Feb 9 I loved this movie. Liam plays a creepy role but nails it. Christina Ricci is naked through half the movie and the little boy keeps you thinking. Is she Dead or is she Alive. Wasn't sure.... See more Kenneth P 12/15/2024 After Life is just a wonderful, thoughtful, well directed and acted series. Ricky Gervais is brilliant in his acting, writing and directing and if you have a sensitive and caring side you will definitely love this. Besides being somewhat sad, and uplifting at the same time, Gervais delivers with some very dark and serious humor. Do yourself a favor and give it a look. See more Lolly W 06/21/2024 I love Christina Ricci but oh my god this movie was so bad it was painful. Her acting was shockingly bad - the psychological premise was interesting but the writing, acting and everything was awful. Ugh See more Mike C 06/19/2024 So, what you think is what you think. She is obviously still alive. Everyone watching is waiting for the tense discovery and escape, but it never comes. The ending is rushed, over in 10 minutes, and she doesn't escape, and her boyfriend never discovers the truth. It's a sad ending for no reason other than to be edgy I guess, but it just leaves you annoyed. Plus, parts of the story make no sense. The whole movie is a bit amateurish. Everyone is whispering for dramatic effect and scenes are drawn out, because they don't have enough money for more scenes. It is a good idea for a psychological thriller done badly with a bad ending.
