The story is an epic that is as daring and ambitious as its subject, a relentless conqueror who by the age of 32 had amassed the greatest empire the world had ever seen. Past and present collide to form the puzzle of the protagonist, a tapestry of triumphs and tragedies in which childhood memories and Alexander's rise to power unfold side by side with the later day expansion of his empire, and its ultimate downfall.

Critics Consensus

Even at nearly three hours long, this ponderous, talky, and emotionally distant biopic fails to illuminate Alexander's life.

While it's worth applauding Alexander for not making its legendary hero 100% hetero, there's nothing else to recommend about this stilted, tedious epic.

Though Alexander is emotionally and intellectually incoherent, it's the work of a first-rate filmmaker who creates unforgettable images...could any contemporary actor fill Alexander's globe-bestriding shoes? He remains beyond Farrell's grasp.

It's not at all clear what Stone is getting at, other than suggesting that conquering the world is exhausting and psychologically damaging work.

Stone has always relished posing more questions than he has answers in biopics. In Alexander, however, he enjoys it a little too much.

Visualmente imponente, mas narrativamente fustigante e sem rumo. Entre escolhas de elenco bizarras e um ritmo arrastado, este épico falha em fazer justiça à figura histórica de Alexandre, resultando numa obra inchada e cansativa.

The Ultimate Cut is very long but it doesn't have many dull moments. The production design is excellent. Battles scenes are great, although there aren't many. Performances are good for most. It is well directed and executed by Stone. Overall, an enjoyable movie.

Way too long of a movie, way too obsessed with homosexuality, way too little insight into Alexander… It was very poorly written, poorly acted, but most of the camera work was decent… This entire movie just seemed like a huge waste of money, time, and energy… This was not an editing mistake, this was a problem with writing, casting, directing, acting, some of the costumes were off too… This was just bad in so many ways…

Slow but not as slow as the Odyssey. It's a pretty good fantasy movie.

Really enjoyed this film, it was long but I watched the whole thing with easy, even as a teenager back in the day and again lately, not sure why all the hate honestly. Good story, good acting.
