Critics Consensus

Annihilation backs up its sci-fi visual wonders and visceral genre thrills with an impressively ambitious -- and surprisingly strange -- exploration of challenging themes that should leave audiences pondering long after the end credits roll.

It's an exploration of the weight of our own mistakes. How the choices we make, and the things we can't change, fundamentally change us.

Annihilation is a visceral sensory experience that chills the blood and makes the skin crawl (literally), leading to a bravura conclusion that would make Tarkovsky proud and any jaw drop.

Absorbing and hypnotic, Annihilation is the best kind of sci-fi film - the kind that challenges and subverts the genre, all the while introducing new ideas that you'll see in films to come.

The brilliance of Annihilation is that it encourages conversation, it makes your brain itch whether you’re on your first, second, or third viewing.

Masterfully mind-bending, Annihilation will draw you back in again and again, even when you might not understand exactly what happened.

Great sci-fi is very rewatchable, and Annihilation qualifies; it may not be quite as strong as Ex Machina, but who cares?

Hated the characters except for Natalie Portman. The set design looked too fake. The plastic flowers were distracting. The animals & the ending were tight. But just kinda boring.

If I had to pick the two most important things for a science fiction movie to include I would say an interesting concept and something visual you've never seen before. "Annihilation" checks both those boxes very quickly, and then continues to do so repeatedly. Once inside the shimmer you never know what's going to happen or what you're going to be looking at.

Cada situacion que ocurre a lo largo de la pelicula te cala hasta la medula y te produce desde el asco hasta el escalofrio. Poder lograr todo esto y que aun asi quieras ver lo que ocurrira despues habla mucho de la genialidad que se presenta.

Atmosphere inside the shimmer was beautiful. Interesting creatures with a decent alien plot.

I have to think of it as being different from the book, as it tells a different story than the book does. It's cool and has some interesting details, definitely exciting to watch the characters' internal conflicts tear them apart as they are mutated and altered by exposure to Area X, but the explanations of the "sci-fi" elements were just a bit too silly and disconnected from actual biology, and I found myself thinking of many ways the movie could have gone harder with the body horror and themes of the otherness of nature and our own bodies. I found the mutations and "creepy" things to be a little too "basic," and it was also hard to believe the characters were scientists when they kept touching everything with no protective gear! But it was still visually beautiful and interesting to watch overall.
