It portends to be a deep and psychological film, but there really isn’t much depth in the end in my opinion. No real strong statements are made other than abuse is bad, and can have lasting effects. Go to Full Review

Hollis Q @Hollisqueens 1 day ago udition is a dating nightmare that turns into a descent into pure terror. Ryo Ishibashi gives a chilling performance as a lonely man whose search for love opens a door he can’t close. The film toys with your trust, feeds you comfort, then rips the floor out from under you. What begins as a quiet study of loneliness becomes a mindfuck about obsession, cruelty, and the price of mistaking silence for innocence. That final stretch? A test of how much horror the human body and mind can take. Miike doesn’t just cross the line. He sets it on fire. See more Alain E @AlainE Sep 27, 2026 The first two thirds build nicely a disturbing atmosphere. The lonely middle aged widower gets infatuated with a much younger girl he met pretending he was holding auditions for a future film. The girl proves to be quite untraceable. No family he can meet, unclear employment history and she hides her address. Early on we are shown though that in her house she keeps a man inside a sack! In the final third there is all kind of gratuitous acts of violence and time flashbacks that don’t exactly make sense. I turned it off twenty two minutes before the end. I have nothing against violence if it is an organic part of a story. Here it is just being offered to shock (and ultimately bore) the viewer. On Cineverse. See more Welll A @Azevader88 Sep 22, 2026 The film has the merit of having practically inaugurated the 'torture porn' subgenre, of having a nihilistic look at the relationships of the end of the millennium (life sucks, etc.), of extreme violence, of the submission of women in Japanese society, of having anticipated a dynamic similar to that of dating sites and apps almost 30 years earlier and for the freshness it brought to cinema in its time. I think the problem was that I watched it many decades and many similar films later. The script didn't have the same impact and even kind of disappointed me, because I created expectations over the years. See more Jasmine W @jasniquejewels Aug 31, 2026 this film was truly disturbing and will forever haunt me in a good way. See more Justin S. @RT17693274 May 2, 2026 Favorite. Awesome movie. See more Oliver C @OliverClose Feb 23, 2026 Audition is a trap dressed as a love story. Ryo Ishibashi gives the film a quiet, human center as desire turns into dread. The writing plays on loneliness, control, and the lies people tell themselves. What begins as courtship becomes something far darker. The terror comes from the silence, the waiting, and the moment you realize the wrong person has been invited in. See more Read all reviews
