Tom Sterling (Josh Hartnett) is a dot-com superstar living the high life in New York City. Tom's fortune is jeopardized when the tech bubble bursts in the summer of 2001, and his main investor, Cyrus (David Bowie), is reluctant to sign off on a deal that would guarantee an influx of cash. Forced to seek financial help, he turns to his brother (Adam Scott), with whom he has a strained relationship, for a loan. But, as Tom's business fails, he realizes his personal relationships are what really need saving.

Une startup rapidement coté en bourse qui attire l attention de nombreux investisseurs. Si le rythme du film est plutôt régulier, il est loin d être vide de sens. Le personnage ambigu, égocentrique et décapant de Tom est joué a la perfection par Josh Hartnett. Parfois manipulateur mais toujours tranchant, déshumanisé par son entourage qui ne sait plus a quelle facette de l homme elle a faire. Le monde des affaires, tout puissant, l emportera finalement sur la paternité de l entreprise.
