"Badland" is ultimately too beholden to the past to be as energized as it should be.

Justin Lee's indie Western should satisfy genre enthusiasts with a strong cast and an entertaining spin on a familiar story.

With a low-budget, low-energy feel, this Western gets off to a wobbly start, but thanks to several great veteran performers, it soon finds an even, laconic tone that should please fans of the genre.

Despite using plenty of the usual tropes of the genre (silent, but appealing anti-hero, a woman in peril, an underdog fight against evil types, etc.) Badlands stumbles.

Given a few more passes on the script, take out the chapter brakes and maybe punch up the action, Badland could have been a modern-day cowboy flick worth the near two hour run time.

Lee's film never escapes its B-movie roots, nor does it try to, embracing its own pompousness.

Without a doubt this is the slowest most tedious "duster" I've seen in 70 some odd year, a cloud of dust would have been more interesting. With this decent cast the Director should be looking for a different line of work, Badlands is a dismal failure. The best part was killing off Trace Atkins early.

I was too distracted by the unrealistic props and background actions to watch this movie. Square bales? Flakes of alfalfa? Unsaddle the horse already, and why is he still standing around wearing his bridle? Curtains on the shed. How many outfits does this poor struggling farm girl own? Bruce Dern has pneumonia? It was worse than a Hallmark movie.

Fine cinamatography, acting and some about human relation, but then again it becomes shallow - and big Hector got very soft pretty easily.

The reviews might make some question watching this movie, but for low budget they made an amazing film! You will not regret watching this movie. Just please give it more than 10min of your time.
