Critics Consensus

Though unabashedly crude and juvenile, Caddyshack nevertheless scores with its classic slapstick, unforgettable characters, and endlessly quotable dialogue.

"Caddyshack" is an above average example of the over-inflated B-movie gag film genre because of its expert performances. Go to Full Review Judy Stone San Francisco Chronicle Jul 28, 2020

The humor in this film is very high-yield. I laughed and laughed, even when I probably shouldn't have. Go to Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Jan 14, 2025

It's Rodney Dangerfield who rules this show, as his delivery of some truly hilarious lines is spot-on. Go to Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand Aug 19, 2023
Essentially 'Animal House' on the links, it's neither as raucous nor as outrageous as that definitive college comedy but it has the same rebellious spirit and a great cast of comedy legends showing the young co-stars how it's done. Go to Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com Jun 25, 2023

Caddyshack is problematic today in that it depicts racism and bigotry, but non-snowflake viewers should have no problem understanding that such outdated attitudes are the target of the film’s irreverence... Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Movie Guy Apr 13, 2026 Great to see on the big screen! See more Lincoln L @Linkolnbio2 Sep 28, 2026 It's standard fare, it offers nothing new or special, delivering just the bare minimum. See more Jason H @RT50328122 Sep 22, 2026 It's only fitfully funny. Doesn't really work as a whole. See more Mitch M @MitchMover Jul 17, 2026 Because of all the hype, I watched this movie three times to make sure I wasn't missing anything, but after three viewings, I still don't find it very funny. I just don't understand how this is considered by many to be one of the best comedies ever made. I have now decided that watching it a fourth time isn't gonna change my opinion of it. Thumbs down! See more Robert P @RT68829131 Jul 9, 2026 Bill Murry is one of my alter egos, Caddy shack, Ghostbusters, Trips. I hate pretentious people, this movie puts them in their place. I am a Raiders fan, the Mad Stork, Ted Hendricks is my football alter ego. Look at the Raiders, Tooz, Mad Bomber, Mad Stork, Todzilla. They fit right in with Bill Murray See more Chris S @Janomi Jun 26, 2026 Caddyshack is one of those comedies that's remembered more for its individual moments than its overall story. Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield, Bill Murray, and Ted Knight each bring completely different comedic styles, yet they somehow fit together perfectly. Murray's battle with the gopher and Dangerfield's nonstop one-liners have become comedy classics for a reason. The movie also deserves credit for its fearless sense of humor. It happily pokes fun at country club culture, class divisions, and social pretension without taking anything too seriously. That irreverent attitude helped influence a generation of comedies that followed. The biggest weakness is that there's barely a central plot holding everything together. Danny may be the main character, but he's regularly overshadowed by the much funnier supporting cast, making his story the least memorable part of the movie. Even so, the performances, quotable dialogue, and outrageous humor make Caddyshack an easy comedy to revisit. See more Read all reviews
