[A] clearly sincere but achingly cliched look at what's good and bad about the sport and the society that sanctions it.

No one documentary could ever really encompass all that's fascinating and distressing about boxing as a kingmaking sport, a violent cultural phenomenal and a shady business. The slickly made "Champs" certainly tries, with varied success.

CHAMPS isn't satisfied with status quo fan-fiction that would've left every viewer with false feelings in their hearts - that, in this context, is an irresponsible copout. No, CHAMPS wants the big prize.

I watched Champs because of Mike Tyson, and it felt like watching a biography instead of a sports doc. I’ve always liked biographies because they take away the highlight reel and show the actual person. You see where these guys came from, what drove them, and what didn’t magically fix itself even after they 'made it'. It changes the way you look at people you admire. Less myth and more reality. Super cool.
