In the near future, a mechanized police force patrols the streets and deals with lawbreakers -- but now, the people are fighting back. When one police droid is stolen and given new programming, he acquires the ability to feel and think for himself. While the robot, dubbed "Chappie (Sharlto Copley)," puzzles out human behavior, the authorities begin to see him as a danger to mankind and order; they will stop at nothing to ensure that Chappie is the last of his kind.

Critics Consensus

Chappie boasts more of the big ideas and visual panache that director Neill Blomkamp has become known for -- and, sadly, more of the narrative shortcomings.

The larger story is positively riddled with plot holes, and any sense of subtlety seems to have fallen right through them.

It's this time-old message of humanity, adapted to fit with today's technologies, that transcends the overpowering, at times clunky, cinematic vessel.

Its oddly jumbled machinery never clicks. The logic of Chappie gradually disintegrates, becoming increasingly farcical.

Both the film and the robot lack impact, presence, purpose, distinction, and, worst of all, uniqueness.

Blomkamp’s film contains a concept ripe with possibility, but instead of realizing its full potential, he loses himself in machines and mayhem.

사이버 펑크에 환장한 중학생이 만든 듯한 작품. 과장된 스타일과 공감하기 어려운 내러티브 사이에서 한스 짐머의 음악이 홀로 빛난다.

Chappie has plenty to like because the robot himself gives the movie its emotional hook. His innocence, fear, curiosity, and childlike development make him oddly lovable, even when the story around him becomes messy. Sharlto Copley gives Chappie a real personality through the motion-capture work and voice performance. The physicality makes him feel vulnerable and alive, which is essential because the movie depends on caring about him. Dev Patel also brings sincerity as Deon, the creator whose ambition opens the door to questions about consciousness, memory, identity, and what makes someone alive. Neill Blomkamp’s Johannesburg setting gives the film a gritty sci-fi world of crime, robotics, poverty, and militarized technology. The ideas are interesting, but the execution is uneven, and some characters are more irritating than compelling. Still, Chappie has enough heart and imagination to make it memorable.

If it is PG 13 it would be great (it's my opinion)

This movie has made me so unreasonably annoyed that i had to create an ACCOUNT to post about it. It's ideas, much like the plot are all over the place, with exaggerated and stupid caricatures that are called "characters". Plot holes that will make you WISH the protagonist was shot when anything happened. If i laughed once, it was too much, the egregious need to keep the drama up at all times doesn't make the movie immersive, it makes it unbearable to watch. Don't waste your time. Look, if you like shitty Hollywood movies, shoot your shot. Drunk watching? even better, expect something good? run
