Critics Consensus

Despite being blessed with Jena Malone in the lead, Consecration serves up Catholic-themed horror that's far more hoary than hallowed.

Sure, it’s purest hokum, but real pride has gone into crafting it.

When the threat the characters are facing remains so vague for so long, it robs the story of tension. It doesn’t help that Smith keeps the horror elements to a minimum, or that the picture is so drably colored and dimly lit.

Through it all... “Consecration” grows increasingly murky and blood-drenched and contrived.

If anything, Consecration knows how to get your attention at the start. But upon uncovering the details of its mystery, the movie grows tedious as it wears on.

Consecration is a disjointed affair with sparks of interest scattered throughout that nonetheless ends up as a middling entry into the newly popular religious horror sub-genre.

Good plot broadly speaking, but the execution was subpar. Too much emphasis on red herrings and not enough logic to make it rewatchable. The second viewing would leave you frustrated with plot holes and gaps in sense.
