Critics Consensus

A satire that keeps its knives sharpened, Coup! is a satisfying and swift meal served up with a sly Peter Sarsgaard performance as a garnish.

Anchored by its leads, “Coup!” is a tasty morsel of social commentary about problems that continue to plague our world.

A tiresome self-satisfied tone that is made a fair bit more tolerable by Sarsgaard’s juicy lead performance.

A dark comedy about class warfare, government overreach and infectious disease. It’s a lot more fun than that sounds.

Holding the film together, though, is Sarsgaard, whose riveting and nuanced turn brings some heart to this broad caricature.

Pleasantly grandiose, but deeply cynical social satire, ultimately redeemed by its two lead performances.

A delightful change of pace (I did not search a remake). Best I've seen of Sarsgaard since The Skelton Key. I didn't not to spoil my viewing, but Google NYC/America in 1918 to get a background... I will in hindsight.

Nice to see a movie with an original thoughtful script and production. So many retreads and sequels nowadays.
