After transferring to a Los Angeles high school, Sarah (Robin Tunney) finds that her telekinetic gift appeals to a group of three wannabe witches, who happen to be seeking a fourth member for their rituals. Bonnie (Neve Campbell), Rochelle (Rachel True) and Nancy (Fairuza Balk), like Sarah herself, all have troubled backgrounds, which combined with their nascent powers lead to dangerous consequences. When a minor spell causes a fellow student to lose her hair, the girls grow power-mad.

Critics Consensus

The Craft's campy magic often overrides the feminist message at its story's core, but its appealing cast and postmodern perspective still cast a sporadic spell.

The Craft has got its own energy and confidence, as well as a kind of 90s fearlessness that went with not knowing, or perhaps not caring, about the sensitivities surrounding young people’s anxieties that are a more central part of today’s conversation.

I really enjoy the characters. Every single one of them is very unique and the film does an excellent job at fleshing out each girl.

Classic 1990's coming of age drama with a witch theme. The Craft (1996) is like The Crow (1994) with witches. It's an absolute dark delight. The 90's grungy aesthetic, goth girls, intimate close ups, dark themes, and innovative camera ideas fill the screen much to my pleasure. Speaking of The Crow, The Craft utilizes the same composer, Graeme Revell. The highlight of The Craft is certainly the cast for the youthful coven of witches. They carry every scene with a realism for the time. Fairuza Balk is the head witch Nancy with goth outfits and make-up to spare. Her portrayal of depression, anger, and insanity is just simply a joy to watch her act. Robin Tunney delivers her finest acting ever as the lead Sarah. Tunney is pretty, likable, depressed, and devious simultaneously. She nails Sarah. Neve Campbell plays the dejected Bonnie without confidence over her terrible burn scars. Lastly, Rachel True is excellent as Rochelle with her uncertainty and strength.

Pretty creepy for a 90's movie! It's like y2k vibes + witchy spooky aesthetic. The plot is decent. It's an entertaining watch

The Craft is teenage witchcraft with a side of revenge and a very serious attitude problem. Four outsiders discover that power is fun right up until it starts charging interest. Moody, nasty, stylish, and proof that high school was basically a horror movie anyway. And then there’s the real magic trick. Watching friendship turn into a power struggle, one bad decision at a time. Nobody here is exactly innocent, but that’s the point. The spells are flashy, the consequences are personal. By the end, you’re less worried about the supernatural than you are about who’s getting invited to lunch.

Not my bag. However, they did really go for it with the effects. Balk, Campbell and True had great presence. Funny to have Taylor, too.
