It’s not just an important story, it's also told in a way that gripped me and it has some of the best performances I have ever seen from Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto. The film isn't the most historically accurate depiction of Woodruff. In reality he was an openly bisexual man and was a vocal member of the Dallas Gay Alliance. While this is a major change from the truth it serves as the film's point of conflict and it does work incredibly well for both character and story development. Jared clearly researched and spoke to many trans people to build a convincing character. The controversy surrounding the casting decisions were heavily debated by the trans community but as a result the industry changed the approach and this led to many trans people being cast in much more prominent roles. While people may argue that a straight man shouldn't play a trans man, this is the same as saying a gay man can't play a straight man. 8 / 10 See more Caleb S @review-person-friend77 May 26 This movie was powerful. I’ve always been a proponent of using medicine through legal means, but this movie made me rethink a lot of my opinion about regulations concerning the terminally ill. I was very impressed with the acting and the storytelling and how it helped the viewer to overcome stereotypes and prejudice towards people with HIV, particularly homosexual and bisexual patients. As a movie, it did its job—it helped change the audience’s paradigm through art. If anything, I am much more compassionate toward those who want to seek alternative treatments. See more Adrian C @RT55155806 Oct 14 To preface this review, I'll mention why I watched this movie in the first place. I had never heard of it, until I wondered how DiCaprio didn't win an Oscar for the Wolf. McConaughey stole it from him with his performance in Dallas Buyers Club. I was perplexed because I had never seen such a performance as DiCaprio's in the Wolf and couldn't believe he fell short of McConaughey. The movie starts off with a "bang", literally. McConaughey has intercourse with a prostitute which is fairly unknown to the audience at the time. And that's where he is exposed to HIV which is the centerpiece of the entire movie. The start to the movie is filled with guilt, sin, and negligence which is a common theme throughout the movie. Subtitles help to understand not only the southern accent, but the poor speech and mumbling displayed by the uneducated characters. My favorite particular aspect of the movie is the evolution of McConaughey's character as he is forced to expose himself to people much different than him. He goes to being a radical homophobe to being accepting and defensive for them. See more Read all reviews
