Blake- N @PBSAniDom May 5 Deep Rising (1998) surprised me more than I expected. Going in, I thought it might feel like a mashup trying too hard to echo the buddy-action tone of Lethal Weapon and the late-90s horror vibe of I Know What You Did Last Summer. But honestly, it doesn’t come off like a ripoff. The movie plays things a bit more seriously than I anticipated, especially with its atmosphere and pacing. There’s a mix of action and creature horror that works at times, even if it’s not always consistent. Some moments land well, others feel a bit dated or uneven. What stood out is that it tries to do its own thing, even if it doesn’t fully succeed. It’s entertaining in spots, but not something I’d revisit often. Overall, I’d give it a 5/10. See more Jacob B @RT89309114 Oct 14 Not on the same level as director Stephen Sommers' subsequent action-horror forays The Mummy and The Mummy Returns with weaker acting and a more formulaic vibe that makes it feel more like Aliens at sea rather than its own thing, Deep Rising still has some decent action, memorable death scenes and well-done VFX save for some outdated CGI. It also has the privilege of being a more distinctive film for Sommers due to it being rated R unlike his other films save for a Dean Koontz adaptation that banished him to director jail which were either targeted towards families or openly gunning for the four quadrant demographic, allowing for a darker tone, compared to his other films. And it's not just the gorier content that makes it stand out but also the fact that everyone's morally gray unlike the more clear cut heroes of The Mummy movies, Van Helsing and the G I. Joe movie with even the more sympathetic characters being aware that they're transporting mercenaries up to something shady. While I think the improvements in The Mummy a year later make Deep Rising's shortcomings be more glaring in comparison, I do think it's a worth watching at least once, especially if you're one of those action junkies itching for some more ass-kicking during Halloween. The guns have a never ending bullet supply. Everything is way over the top, including CGI. If a larky action movie is your thing then you'll probably love this. See more Tim B @RT84391156 02/03/2025 Terrifying premise, sea monsters that are actually believable as opposed to Mermaids and the same old 50 foot sharks. This is a guy movie, not on par with Predator, but very much so the same kinda flick. Guns, Explosions, Gore and Freaky Sea Monsters. It’s fun, it’s scary and it’s a cool scary creature feature. Guys, this movie is near 30 at the time of this review. Understand that before watching. That said, the CGI is actually good and scary at times and has less good moments. See more Read all reviews
