Director Terence Young’s espionage thriller Dr. No (1962) is as cool and iconic as spy thrillers get. Young delivers James Bond’s first film as an intriguing espionage thriller with missing people and files. Young’s direction is engaging, action packed, and detail oriented. He pulls off Bond setting up traps, a chauffeur car chase, hearse chase, Bond making love, and Bond investigating. Sean Connery is perfect for MI6 spy James Bond. He’s ruggedly handsome, effortlessly suave, amiably charming, easily funny, brilliantly cool, and a deft spy. Connery’s sheer charisma makes Bond so likable and engaging. He pulls off seeking spy clues that hint at the truth of Dr. No and sleeping with every woman Bone encounters. No other actor has ever truly embodied James Bond so aptly. Swiss actress Ursula Andress is shockingly beautiful as Honey Ryder. Her seashell diving Bond Girl is immediately charming, funny, and gorgeous. His first appearance at the card table gives Bond his cool confidence, charm, danger, sophistication, and slightly cruel edge with effortless ease. The movie also lays the foundation for the entire franchise: the gun-barrel opening, exotic locations, glamorous women, secret-agent cool, villain lairs, and Bond’s mix of elegance and violence. Ursula Andress also makes a major impression as Honey Ryder, especially with her iconic entrance from the ocean. The Jamaican setting gives the film a colorful, sun-soaked adventure quality, but Dr. No is slower and more modest than many later Bond entries. The villain has a strong look and concept, but he appears late and feels underused. It is historically essential, even if the formula would become more exciting later. The movie has slow pacing, and it really makes me bored. And Dr. No appears at the end of the movie, it could have been better if he appeared a bit before. See more Read all reviews
