Critics Consensus

Dragon Blade is beautifully staged and choreographed, but between the battles, its talented cast is overwhelmed by a dull story and choppy editing.

Handsome production design and sweeping battle vistas lend a touch of class, with Chan directing the action scenes with trademark brio.

There are nice moments, but this is pure bombast, and Chan's natural action flair is not given free rein.

For those who ever wondered what it would be like to see John Cusack and Jackie Chan engage in a swordfight (both of you), here is "Dragon Blade."

...it would be misleading (if gracious) to focus only on Dragon Blade's handful of redeeming aspects. In total, it's a ridiculous drag of a movie...

The narrative is notably bizarre, with a smorgasbord of never-ending tribulations and lingering speeches - however, brush that aside for a film that relies on the spirit and merits of its actors and crew.

Spectacular fight scenes and great costumes but stilted acting and plot. The Romans asking for directions to Parthia? They would have gone through it to get to China. Big plot hole. Byzantines blinded the emperors to disqualify them. Romans killed them.

I thought Cusack did very well in his role.

A Roman Centurion and his legion join forces with an exiled Chinese special forces unit to build a city on the Silk Road and unify the region through peace. The plot has too many ideas, most of which are poorly explained and the frequent slow motion scenes and flashbacks interrupt the flow. Dodgy CGI and costumes but it has a weird rustic style as it represents the different historical cultures. Chan’s signature quirky fighting style is entertaining if anachronistic and the big final battle at the end with all the different war bands coming together was good.

I enjoyed this. Felt like a lower budget epic. Good action. For casual kung fu fans.
