Teddy B @RT90521672 4 days ago Never have I seen such a perfect pairing of subject and director for a biopic. Tim Burton's direction, as dictates all his early films, is wonderful, visually brilliant and packed with energy, but it is his sympathy for Ed Wood that provides the film it's emotional core metatextually. Burton doesn't see Wood as a laughingstock, or a sleazy failure, or a braindead optimist---because he really wasn't. Wood was a man of great passion, great pains and greater misguidedness, and for that I find him as admirable as some of Hollywood's greatest. He wanted to tell stories, he just wasn't exactly cut out for the big leagues. Burton's framing of Wood's life as a humble tragedy that he really tries to smile through is genuinely heartbreaking. Burton's genuine fondness for Wood's work also shines through, capturing with loving detail every inaccuracy, small mistake, limitation, paired with a wonderful cast and an exuberant Depp in the title role, brighteyed and beaming with strange energy. Johnny Depp is bound to be some of Katy's favorite actors - an actor's acting has talent, especially when he sounds similar to Willy Wonka. Many others bring impact. I believe I now know where Booberella from "The Simpsons" comes from. Every cast member is great & it is funny too. Just. Ed Wood had talent - have a B/W camera & everything feels so real. It feels like the mid 20th century. This was rather distinct of a choice for a director to do so it is set in the time. There was nothing like this, making a movie about a not so great director with a cult following is something special. See more Ashequl I @Tofa13 Jul 2, 2026 An absolute triumph from director Tim Burton that achieves the ultimate irony—making a perfect, high-art film about the worst director of all time. Ed Wood is beautifully shot in a stunning, stylized black-and-white cinematography that captures the essence of 1950s B-movies. Johnny Depp delivers a brilliant, career-best performance packed with an infectious, breezy optimism that makes you deeply care for a filmmaker with zero technical skill. The heart of the movie lies in the moving relationship between Ed and horror legend Bela Lugosi, played flawlessly by Martin Landau. While the screenplay cuts off early and sanitizes the darker, tragic realities of the real director's life—making it fall a bit short as a complete, historically accurate biography—it functions perfectly as a joyful, hilarious, and compassionate tribute to the pure love of making movies. The script, the acting, the black and white cinematography, it's just brilliant. I am by no means a Tim Burton fanatic, but this film is worthy of so much respect. Depp, Landau and Parker give the best performances of their careers, so invested.. Then you have incredible supporting performances by Murray, Jones and others. Magical film.
