What to Know

Critics Consensus

Despite an electrifying performance by William H. Macy, David Mamet's one-act morality play translates poorly into a film that is overburdened by dialogue.

It's disturbing and challenging and will worry away at you... But, that said, it is its own genre, is peculiarly riveting, and is only 87 minutes. Go to Full Review Derek Malcolm London Evening Standard Jul 6, 2007

This is a small film with a big payback, like a series of tableaux that illustrate how a mildmannered Mr Everyman can become viciously untamed. Go to Full Review Anthony Quinn Independent (UK) Jul 6, 2007

It plays like a low-cal Falling Down, with all the rage of Michael Douglas's office malcontent but none of his dark humour. Possibly the weakest thing Mamet has ever written. Go to Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews Jun 10, 2023

"Edmond" is beyond black comedy, it's a comedy in almost total stygian darkness. A comedy where the laughs make you cough up razor blades. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

B P @Bradster69 Sep 11, 2026 Not Bad, but Not My Favorite See more Paul H @Paulhood Jun 7, 2026 It's dark, dark, dark. Don't even watch it if you're not prepared for that. It's from a 1982 Mamet play, and if you're not used to his stylized way of writing dialogue, you probably won't like it either. Without giving too much away, my personal interpretation of the "message" is that "water seeks its own level." I personally like film adaptations of Mamet plays and have seen several. See more Max M. @Househuntermax Feb 28, 2026 How is there so much talent on and off the screen and this movie be so so very very terrible and unwatchable? I think this movie is trying to send some kind of message but it’s so bad I don’t really care to decipher what it is. See more Oaklee D @ODie63 Oct 13, 2024 If "American Psycho" was grounded in reality, "Edmond" would be the result. It was a descent film even though it drags in places. There is a message in the movie about the meaning of life even though I don't 100% understand what it is, but I think that was by design and it's supposed to leave you feeling that way. See more Mark H @RT99794489 May 8, 2024 A truly horrible movie...downright evil & rotten. A complete waste of time. Godawful. See more Horror fan 4 @Horrorfan4life Apr 3, 2024 One of Macy's best movies. A character goes from sweet and innocent to demented and dangerous. I'm here for all of it.
