What to Know

Critics Consensus

Extinction has a few intriguing ideas, but they -- and some game performances from its talented stars -- are lost in the movie's muddled plot and frustrating pacing.

"The Walking Dead" must really be leaving its mark on the entire zombie subgenre. Go to Full Review Devan Coggan Entertainment Weekly Jul 30, 2015

Vivas tries to add a family-drama twist to an otherwise standard survival story, but the characters aren't complex enough (and the secrets aren't explosive enough) to elevate this beyond a basic zombie flick. Go to Full Review Katherine Pushkar New York Daily News Jul 29, 2015

The film's core problems: too little zombie and too much plot. Go to Full Review Mikel Zorrilla Espinof Apr 22, 2020
On paper it sounds quite good and... I had high expectations for it, something that surely has influenced how it ended up being such a huge disappointment. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review Molly Henery The Blogging Banshee Nov 2, 2018

They tried to create something with a deeper story focusing on the survivors, while also updating the zombies into something more terrifying. Unfortunately, it just fell a bit flat. Go to Full Review Deirdre Crimmins Film Thrills Aug 21, 2018
Extinction has an interesting spin on the zombies themselves and does a good job of featuring two very different ways to live out the zombie apocalypse, but ultimately adds little life to the subgenre. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

stevie68a T @RT15696487 4 days ago Much better than the ratings here. My only complaint is Mathew Fox went from being a long haired madman, to a stunningly handsome leading man. The change was just too severe to be believable. See more Martine L @RT95095359 6 days ago It’s really not as bad as people wrote here in the reviews. Unlike what people have written, there is good zombie action albeit it’s more towards the ends. I might be an easy audience and I also really enjoy zombie movies, but I was on the edge of my seat for most of it. I liked it. See more Chet W @RT43675629 6 days ago I’m sorry I thought it was a good movie, I shut the light off and turned on the surround sound and it had some really scary scenes to where I jumped. See more Phillip H @RT58181597 Oct 1, 2026 It wasn’t bad at all. Not sure why people are not liking it. See more Jay L @Jay.Livin Sep 30, 2026 There’s not a lot of zombie scenes in a majority of the movie but the storyline is pretty good. Although I enjoyed the storyline, I feel like for a zombie movie there should’ve been more scenes about fighting zombies and not the strain on the relationship between two of the main characters.
