Critics Consensus

Visually creative, but also aimless, repetitive, and devoid of character development.

The flaccid film is a goon-show version of Thompson's commentary on the craziness of the American Dream. Go to Full Review

The one stand-out is Johnny Depp, who brings Hunter S Thompson to bald-headed, pigeon-toed life. Go to Full Review

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is a cautionary tale, yet despite everyone’s best efforts, it also now feels like a nostalgic blast for those of us whose wild days are in the rearview. Go to Full Review

Andrew L @Cybermat 2d A film for the select few. Covering the real life trip made by Hunter and Acosta to cover the mint 400 back in 1971 las vegas- watching this you think nah they surely cant have been this crazy, but reading the article in rolling stone plus fhe book and listening to the actual tape recordings of the journey you realise, jeez these two were actually like this. The film has some Gilliam touches like the several dwarves littered about and the touches added to the crazy and i wouldnt have it any other way. One of my favourite movies of all time and i do love the David leans and Stanley Kubricks but this is alternative and likely too alternative for many. Superb= try the criterion collection too and the commemtaries. Plus look up the gonzo tapes. 10/10 See more Adrian R. @Enqine 3d Filmmaking is great otherwise it's void of anything notable See more Steven N. @stevennavel Jan 9 It is like a visualization of taking acid in a film version. I have watched this sober and on acid and they did a good job with the visualization See more Dannon M. @danos Dec 20 SURREAL! To say the least! See more Zach J. @Jenkins158 Dec 14 8.5/10 See more Giacomo M @Iamsparticus Dec 14 WHY? What is the point of this non-sensical low-budget drug fuelled movie? A road trip through Nevada to get to Las Vegas to report on an endurance bike race through the desert. 1971, alcohol, drugs and a corrupt America. Pointless. Terry Gilliam at his worst.
