The Gheorghius, a devout Romanian Norwegian couple, resettle in a village set in a distant fjord where they become close to their neighbors, the Halbergs. Their children bond despite their different education. When adolescent Elia Gheorghiu shows up at school with some bruises on her body, the community asks itself if the traditional education that the Gheorghiu children get from their parents would have anything to do with it.

Critics Consensus

Presenting a knotty moral dilemma and refusing to provide easy answers, Cristian Mungiu's superbly well-acted Fjord has a chilly surface that belies a heated humanity beneath the frost.

Few films provide as much to think about, to argue about, to be impassioned about. Fjord is breathtaking cinema in more ways than one, both urgent filmmaking and a profound comment on our times.

Its actors, including Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve, as well as two young newcomers, make you believe in one family’s sudden nightmare.

Mungiu might mean for Fjord to cut through the noise and register as a howl into the void, but it’s finally more like an echo chamber: loud and discombobulating, spacious and hollow.

It's ragebait cinema, an act of provocation that's increasingly hard to believe

The morally vague Fjord (about a conservative religious married couple accused of child abuse) invites viewers to think about boundaries and accountability in personal values versus community standards. It's a slow-paced but fascinating legal drama.

An expertly crafted moral thriller that’s so complex and layered you could see it ten times and learn new things about yourself every single time. If you see it a second time try to track a character named Cameron that might seem like a throwaway. Also for discussion- Noora’s boating incident.

The moral compass is very much determined by actions here and it’s hard to make a choice between extreme right and progressive wrong. I really liked Fjord- the picture itself is unique and beautiful and the acting is perfect- was great to see Sebastian Stan in such character.
