Critics Consensus

Though it sacrifices some depth in its characterizations, From Beyond stands as a stunningly grotesque Lovecraft adaptation with a dazzling blend of chilling effects and brainy, cosmic horror.

Isn't quite as wild [as Re-Animator] but it's still Grade-A B-picture horror.

This is, in short, another variant on the hoary horror staple of the monster who feeds on the fears and fantasies lurking at the pit of its victims' psyches, and would be offensive if it weren't so embarrassingly silly.

Jeffrey Combs is SO good here, completely committing to every element of a very demanding role.

This demented tale is sloppily directed, but once it gets going after a stalled start you can't fault its energy and audacity.

From Beyond is inferior to Re-Animator in virtually every regard, but it still qualifies as a grisly good time.

Very trashy, very low-brow, incredibly silly but somewhat entertaining. The storyline isn’t particularly interesting. Most of it takes part in a single house. It isn’t scary but there are some fun, totally over the top gore reminiscent of The Thing or David Cronenberg. If you’ve seen other films by director Stuart Gordon, they have a very distinct look and feel and vibe, which is on display again here. None of the acting is good.

Stuart Gordon's best movie! I like this and Dagon the most, but both are pretty food watches!

One of my favorite Lovecraft movies! Solid performances all around, but the real star of the show is the special effects! Loved this!
