Poppy Hill” is beautiful, but more dull than expected. It would be nice to see Goro Miyazaki engage in stories that actually resonate with him, rather than to follow his father’s script (or footsteps).

It might not be one of the most well-regarded or well-produced of the studio's films, but it's a high point in Gorō's career and one of the final brushstrokes in his father's, and that's more than enough to justify a visit to Poppy Hill.

One of Studio Ghibli’s quietest and most underrated gems. Stepping away from magic to embrace a realistic historical drama set in 1960s Yokohama, the film delivers a beautiful story about youth, memory, and the importance of preserving the past. The background animation is soothing and stunning, and the jazz-infused soundtrack is fantastic. A work filled with sensitivity, nostalgia, and a great deal of heart.

Amazing movie I love the slowness of the life and I love the whole era in the city. It kind of makes you fall in love with the city and I love the relationship between the main two main characters in the house. I think it was really creative and overall pretty good movie.

Studio Ghibli movies are typically very weird, but this movie is oddly normal. No bathhouse, no Catbus, no Giant Moving Castle, just a simple story about young romance and saving The Latin Quarter. Despite its simplicity, it is still a wildly entertaining movie. Umi and Shun are great characters that the audience cares for. The voice cast also does a great job in this one. With the voice cast and the excellent writing, you really do begin to love these characters. And the score is GREAT!! It just brings me peace and reminds me of a hot summer day with a cool breeze. So overall, I highly recommend this film. If you’ve liked other Studio Ghibli movies, you’ll probably like this one too. And if they’re usually too weird for you, this movie will be a nice breath of fresh air.
