Critics Consensus

Ghost in the Shell boasts cool visuals and a compelling central performance from Scarlett Johansson, but the end result lacks the magic of the movie's classic source material.

The characters in this movie just repeat themes and explain plot points to each other, all in the same flat, droning monotone. Go to Full Review

This is an exciting, fun, futuristic thriller that, like its main character, has a probing mind. It will make you think. Go to Full Review

Ghost in the Shell isn’t exactly a bad film, but it’s hard to recommend. Anyone who’s a fan of the original will likely find this a disappointment, while anyone who hasn’t seen the anime would be better off watching that instead. Go to Full Review

It has a visual aspect that appears polished on the surface, but its epicenter of action is focused on sequences that lack appeal with its predictable plot about the ghostly cyborg played by Scarlett Johansson. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Unlike in the anime, this version of the Major is more of a renegade than a leader and cares far more about herself than her teammates. She spends a large chunk of the movie pitying herself. Go to Full Review

Todd B Sep 18, 2024 This was a good movie with Scarlett. Thanks for the live action version of this movie. A good add, and take on the role. See more Dave L @RT29131586 1 day ago This was a fun futuristic film that I really enjoyed with a good cast. I would recomend it. See more Frans B @FransB 2 days ago Brilliant, reminiscent of LUCY, but on steroids 😜, lots of them. Cerebral, very fast paced, intelligent premise, lots of cutting edge technology as far as GCI and special effects go. Wētā Workshop did what only they are able to accomplish as far as practical improvising and design goes. Scarlett Johansson absolutely shines in character, whole cast very convincing in character. Not so far fetched IMO, the time is on our doorstep that AI and tech will trump and surpass humans, scary hey? And everybody is on that ride to nowhere. Lots of food for thought here. Entertaining and captivating. Worth a couple of viewings, you'll see additional detail every time, guaranteed. See more Len P @RT75205440 5 days ago A bit too grunge and dystopian for my taste. The holographics and cyberpunk were overdone. Feels well produced but I was bored and kept checking to see how long until the end. Predictable plot although apparently it is a remake so maybe bot much flexibility available? See more Eddy S @Sad_Eddy Sep 30, 2026 The cast, crew, and especially the VFX talent were good. Even Mr. Sanders did perfectly competent work. This film suffers from the loss of its own ghost in the move to live action. It's good that they tried to stick with the source material so much as they could instead of writing a new story or trying to imbue the Major with different traits and persona, however, they were never going to measure up to the original material no matter how hard they tried. If you are not familiar with the earlier GITS work but interested in this genre, you will love this film. See more Deckard B @B26354 Sep 26, 2026 If a film was ever unnecessary this wins the prize; there are certain films that simply don’t need a reboot, this being one of many. It fails in the singular aspect of attempting to rewrite the core principles; it’s not helped by sloppy poor CGI that looks like AI goop. Save your time and money, the original is light years ahead of this rubbish. See more Read all reviews
