Critics Consensus

Greyhound's characters aren't as robust as its action sequences, but this fast-paced World War II thriller benefits from its efficiently economical approach.

With little character development on paper, the narrative finds victory through Hanks' patient physical performance and the craftsmanship within the battles.

If this is all Tom Hanks imagines a Tom Hanks vehicle to be, he greatly underestimates himself.

The movie itself doesn't really have an identity and isn't too interesting...It's just a very 'okay' film.

Clocking in at a remarkably brisk 85 minutes, GREYHOUND is a lean and mean action thriller that's more respectable than thrilling.

A layered performance from the lead star, who also wrote and produced the film, elevates this from being a mere at-sea war thriller.

Fantastic movie! Dialogue is straight to the point and the whole movie is centered around the main plot of getting across the Atlantic without unnecessary BS character dramas or cut scenes that are not needed.

Despite its short runtime, Greyhound feels surprisingly long and repetitive. The lack of meaningful character development makes it difficult to become invested in the story, which is particularly disappointing given Tom Hanks in the lead role. Overall, an underwhelming and forgettable experience.

This was a great and exciting film of war at sea. Tom Hanks is amazing as well as the whole cast. The costumes, cgi and scenery is great also.

So someone please tell me where the U-boat crew are. Maybe in the shower? Well they are not on the conning tower to see where they are going Nor are any periscopes up. Might be super human and don't need to see where they need to go.

Greyhound does not get nearly enough credit. People don’t talk about this movie enough when they talk about war movies. First, off Tom Hanks is an amazing actor and this film gives is another opportunity to watch him in an intense war drama that has to limited to the confines of a ship in extremely dangerous waters. The whole cast works together to put in a realistic performance of men in the thick of naval warfare. Great script, set, costumes, sound & cinematography. I only have one complaint and it’s the repeated, high pitched and frankly irritating sound of what seems to be a distorted whale call, whenever submarines are surfacing. Of course, I’m just nit picking because the movie is so good that there is just that one thing I could even speak to. Really great film, even on a second viewing. I still cried in that one scene about the middle. Too many of the families of those who died in service, never received their bodies to be able to bury. This movie reminds us of that too.
