A scruffy superhero named Hancock (Will Smith) protects the citizens of Los Angeles but leaves horrendous collateral damage in the wake of every well-intentioned feat. That's OK with Hancock; he doesn't care what people think and is just as likely to be found dozing on a park bench as saving a damsel in distress. However, after saving the life of a PR executive (Jason Bateman) and meeting the man's beautiful wife (Charlize Theron), he realizes that he may have a sensitive side after all.

Jason W @UglyBaby Mar 16 Hancock is not a perfect film, especially the theatrical cut. You should really only watch the extended cut, which provides scenes that should've been in the movie to begin with and successfully bridge the gap between its different halves. Ultimately, Hancock is a character study in how loneliness, depression and self-loathing can wreck a person, even someone with superpowers. It's also a meditation a la Ted Lasso in how one person with enough hope and belief in the inherent goodness of humanity can change someone's life for the better. Jason Bateman's performance is charming and uplifting, and his refusal to give up on Will Smith's Hancock is the real act of heroism on display here. It's his optimism that saves Hancock, not the other way around. Ignore the naysayers. Accept that no movie is perfect, but that even a flawed film can tell a good story about interesting characters and offer something we desperately need right now: hope that we can become something better. I just wish there was better cohesion as it happens pretty abruptly. It has a distinct 'funny' phase then a 'serious' phase, and it should have been more intertwined. The film should've been 20-30 min longer for what it was trying to accomplish. There are plenty of great ideas here, but some of them needed more time in the oven. It's definitely overhated in general though.
