Ben (Joel Moore) and Marcus (Deon Richmond) are college students in New Orleans, enjoying Mardi Gras, when they decide to go on a boat tour of an allegedly cursed bayou. Meeting up with several other tourists, including quietly beautiful Marybeth (Tamara Feldman), they are entertained by their guide Shawn (Parry Shen), who regales them with tales of a ghostly serial killer who wanders the swamp. They laugh off the stories -- until someone, or something, starts picking off members of the group.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

The over-the-top gore, campy acting, and dim cinematography may be part of Hatchet's self-described old-school ethos, but irony alone can't sustain a horror film.

Lacking the satirical bite of the first Scream... this is mere pastiche that doesn't even wink at what it is pointlessly xeroxing from the past. Go to Full Review Tim Robey Daily Telegraph (UK) Oct 5, 2007
Fun horror-comedy about tourists being picked off in the swamps. Tongues are firmly in cheeks; heads don't stay long on shoulders. Go to Full Review Anthony Quinn Independent (UK) Oct 5, 2007

This low-budget horror spoof lasts only 84 minutes, but seems to take forever. Go to Full Review David Day Horror Movie Talk Sep 23, 2025

The comedy is without feeling. The violence is without warrant. The concept is as old as film. Monster bad – but monster also tragic – but get out of my swamp. Go to Full Review Emilie Black JoBlo's Movie Network Sep 21, 2023

It’s one of those films that shows when you put horror fans with talent in charge, you get something great. Yeah, it’s not perfect. Yeah, it’s oh so very 2006, but it’s also so much fun, so bloody, it doesn’t hold back... Go to Full Review Martin Tsai New York Sun Apr 21, 2023

B P @Bradster69 Sep 2, 2026 Not Bad, but Not My Favorite See more Janiece P @RT59768375 Jul 31, 2026 trash not watching ever stupid See more Wayne K @WayneKelso Jul 30, 2026 A horror comedy in a similar vein to Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, only less funny and with fewer likeable characters, Hatchet feels like the kind of film you dream of making when you’re 14 years old. Full of comically dumb characters, gory kills and women who are happy to flash their breasts on every occasion. I applaud the filmmaker’s determination to do everything as practically as possible, resulting in some of the films biggest laughs, and some of the characters, particularly Marcus, get a few great lines. The villain’s mortality is inconsistent, with the film never able to decide whether he’s powerful enough to shrug off bullets or weak enough to be incapacitated by a kick, but it’s biggest flaw is the ending. Basically, it doesn’t have one. It comes to a halt in the middle of an action scene. Not an open ending, just a complete stop, like someone sat on the remote. A fun enough way to kill 80 minutes, but nothing special overall.
