Critics Consensus

Hell Fest might give less demanding horror fans a few decent reasons to scream, but it's neither clever nor frightening enough to leave much of an impression.

Mark Kermode Kermode & Mayo's Film Review Nov 16, 2018
It wasn't anything new, it was old riffs done in a way that was actually quite efficient.... The nastiest is the right level of nasty, the silliness is the right level of silly. Go to Full Review

Plotkin's relentless button-pushing, coupled to the script's cringe-inducing yooftalk, instead mark Hell Fest as unmistakably the work of middle-aged execs trying to jab suggestible teenagers back into cinemas. Go to Full Review

They did this 40 years ago, and better, in 'Halloween.' It's getting really, really tired. Go to Full Review

I can’t recommend seeing Hell Fest in theaters, but it might be worth watching at home when it gets to Netflix. Even then, you will probably enjoy making fun of it with friends more than actually watching it for scares. Go to Full Review

Hell Fest is not a well-rounded film, but it meets expectations by steeping the viewer in spooky imagery and squeezing some suspense out of its premise making it a worthwhile October watch. Go to Full Review

The movie remains satisfying because it's not trying to approach the slasher genre from a place of irony or nostalgia, as many have in recent years. Go to Full Review

Liam D @Mediawatcher2003 12 hrs ago The setting is pretty fun and the cast is fairly decent but this throwback to 80s slashers don’t do anything creative so it isn’t memorable enough to rewatch See more Robert P @Superbad 2 days ago Hell Fest is a *2* star Movie! See more Alex B @AlexBioni 3 days ago Wait, He Called Me Hot? I unapologetically like this movie. It's a guilty pleasure I watch every Halloween. I don't know what it is about horror movies set in haunted houses that I love so much. Haunted houses freak me out, so this is basically my worst nightmare. The acting is fine, very teen drama style, but Tony Todd has a cameo, which is awesome. There are plenty of awkward teen dating cliches. The dialogue is generic and sometimes cringy, like the amazing “Welcome to Hell Fest” line. It's not really scary or bloody, but the production and set design are sick. If Hell Fest were real, I'd absolutely go. The story is thin, with some kids going to a haunted house park while bad things happen. The real horror comes at the end with the reveal of who is behind the murders. I won't spoil it. It's not some masterful twist, but it gives the ending a darker meaning. Is it realistic? No. Original? No. Campy? Absolutely. But I love watching it every year to get into the Halloween season. See more Janet D @janetrd3873 Aug 7, 2026 Liked it a lot. The end was chilling to the bone. See more Richard L @KaneLives Jul 15, 2026 In spite of its fun setting (I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd gladly visit this park!), the film never manages to conjure up an atmosphere of suspense, instead relying strictly on jump-scares to get the heart rate pumping. Add in some extremely cringe dialogue, and possibly one of the worst characters in movie history in Taylor, and you've got a recipe for a forgettable slump with zero rewatchability. See more Oaklee D @ODie63 Jul 15, 2026 with any slasher it's all comes down to the killer and the gore. This film has a really awesome looking killer and lots of gore so it ticks both requirements for me. Story wise it's not doing anything new but the story is not what you come for when it comes to these kinds of films. All in all it's blood splattery goodness. See more Read all reviews
