Critics Consensus

Hellbound: Hellraiser II retains the twisted visual thrill of its predecessor, although seams in the plot are already starting to show.

Though the script for ''Hellbound'' is related to the Barker story, the film drops its plot whenever a fake-looking monster walks on the screen. Ogling strange creatures is the film's true reason for being. Go to Full Review

This follow-up is faster and campier than its mostly somber predecessor, but the basic grim tenets of British horror author Clive Barker's supernatural worldview are still intact. Go to Full Review

It's probably a stretch to surmise that, just as the first film's subtext dealt with health fears, the sequel mines its dread from the horror of malpractice. Go to Full Review

In the end Hellbound simply cannot quite match the visceral effect of its predecessor, but Tony Randel understands that such a match was simply never going to be possible. Go to Full Review

While some of the plot is a little obtuse and hard to follow, it’s made up for with some of the gnarliest gore, and craziest worldbuilding I’ve seen in a long time. Go to Full Review

Effectively explores the more grotesque elements of the original movie, which fans will surely enjoy, though it likely won't win over those who don't have an affinity for Pinhead. Go to Full Review

Alex B @AlexBioni 3 days ago Don't Worry, I'm a Dr. I like the intro, where a normal guy touches the Lament Configuration and gets turned into Pinhead. We also get more of Frank's backstory, which I appreciated even though it was mostly a recap of the first. About 30 minutes in, there's a scene involving someone on a bed that is absolutely wild. The gore and blood are here just like the original, which is great. Part of this movie feels like a rinse and repeat, but I really liked the added Cenobite lore near the ending and some of the new ideas. One thing that bothers me is the beginning in the mental hospital. Why do horror movies always end up in mental hospitals? I honestly didn't like this as much as the original. The pacing feels off, and there is a lot going on. Some things feel rushed instead of properly building up. I also had a hard time following the characters' motivations, especially the returning characters. There is a lot I liked, but the original is still much stronger. See more Max P @maxpress 3 days ago Story gets muddled, but the costumes are fantastic. Hellraiser 1 & 2 are actually not bad. See more Dimitri A @dajazi 5 days ago The movie definitely has a silly story, in part due to odd edits which were likely for budgetary reasons. [¶] It's also a visually uncomfortable one. Settings, costumes and scenery swing from late '80s uber gore to something Hammer Films would have produced, with Claire Higgins' Julia character strolling about in chiffon seemingly pulled from 1970's _The Vampire Lovers._ [¶] Color palettes and lighting harken to that film as well as to the _Nightmare on Elm Street_ media franchise. Or at least they do when dark red food coloring isn't mixed with corn syrup and liberally applied to the film's people and prosthetics. [¶] So is it worth a watch? For free, sure. Reading up on the created mythos is a fun excursion as well. So is skimming one of the franchise's several comic books, although their stories and dialogue are even more absurd than this movie's. See more Huntin P @PaxVobiscum80 Sep 22, 2026 I guess I am too soft for this sort of movie. I saw it once and once was more than enough. It is set in Hell, and far grislier than its predecessor. Bad dreams await. See more Robert P @Superbad Sep 9, 2026 an okay movie but not as good as the first one! See more Ollie W @RT90619198 Sep 6, 2026 Seriously let down by the set design. The hell labyrinth looks like its made of papier-mâché. It starts off incredibly well but gets pretty silly towards the end. Julia tears Franks heart out with her bare hand. Epic soundtrack. Some of the gore looks fairly realistic. Some looks like plastic props from a cheap Halloween store. Many of the special effects look very dated and a rather cheesy. I’d give the first half 5/5 and the second half 3/5. There’s a good film in here somewhere if they re-edited out some of the nonsense. The cast is strong. See more Read all reviews
