Critics Consensus

Elevated by writer-director Clive Barker's fiendishly unique vision, Hellraiser offers a disquieting - and sadistically smart - alternative to mindless gore.

The reason the movie works as well as it does is because of its human characters. Go to Full Review

Horror is at its best when it's relentless. Clive Barker knows this, and his debut feature as director is so gleefully vicious, so relentlessly grim that it's going to be very hard for fans of the genre not to like it. Go to Full Review

This film is Clive Barker’s best film, and it is a unique mix of family dysfunction, sex, sadism, and gore. At times it feels like a 50’s melodrama, other times like a nightmare, and sometimes like torture porn. Go to Full Review

Russell H @RT85733992 1 day ago Creatures were cool but too much sex and overall didn't age well See more Alex B @AlexBioni 4 days ago Come to Daddy This movie is incredible. The story is original, and I HATE Julia. She does all of this just for her husband's brother! Frank is an awful person too. I would hate to be his brother. I really empathize with Larry and Kristy being pulled into this situation. The practical effects are gnarly. A body forming out of the floorboards looks amazing even today. The Cenobites are each designed beautifully. Frank's transformation reminds me of The Mummy (1999), but this looks so much better. The dialogue can be wonky and some acting is just okay, but the dark tone, B movie effects, and originality overshadow those flaws. I love the Lament Configuration and its meaning. The story is unrealistic and I don't care. It's wonderful, and I watch it every October. The imagery is chilling, especially Kristy's dream with the blood soaked sheet, feathers, and candlelight. I wish Frank's backstory was explained better, but I still love this movie. It's iconic for a reason. See more R T @RT44834321 Sep 28, 2026 I dont understand how this got so popular. The story had a lot of potential but its drag down by the sheer amount of just people making out and banging. Just make porn if you want to make sex so bad. I understand that the villain was sex driven but come on at one point it just gets exhausting. The acting was ok on most part except for frank. Honestly the special effects are great for the time and most of the practical effects still look great today. The only great thing about is the cenobites. See more Huntin P @PaxVobiscum80 Sep 22, 2026 Clive Barker's brain gave birth to a new horror icon, Pinhead, and that is the sole merit of this movie. Not a great merit, actually. Blah blah, leather fetish, metal punk BDSM chains and chunks of ripped flesh nightmare material. Very chic at the time. British actors, but set in the US (I think), or is it irrelevant where? A married couple move into a house where the brother-in-law boned the bride and then got sent to Hell when he opened a mysterious box. He is resurrected, or some of him is, when a nasty cut to hubby's hand spills blood on the floorboards. Somehow or other, Mr Viscera persuades the wife, who still yearns for the-best-she-ever-had, to believe it's really him, AND to bring him more victims to aide his continued, erm, reconstitution. Eww! He eventually ends-up wearing his own brother's face, and the adulterous brother was far more handsome, so I'd call that an L, wouldn't you. The daughter gets a-hold of the box and makes a deal to punish the miscreants. Hell awaits! See more Robert P @Superbad Sep 9, 2026 Full of Gore I loved it! See more Brendan B @filmzone Sep 3, 2026 Though the concepts and narrative are complex, it’s pretty easy to enjoy this one. Extra points when then the humans are the bad guys, not the demons.
