Alain E @AlainE Jun 4, 2025 A truly extraordinary visual experience. Framing, colors, illumination and sequencing show great confidence. In many other movies attempts to use these techniques of focusing on details or showing only part of a face appear gimmicky. Here are totally organic. The sex scenes are minimal, necessary for the story and not exploitative at all. I don’t think the ending is explained very well. Suddenly the heroine uses a cane. She previously had seen a doctor, after a fainting episode. He had drawn labs and when communicating the results he mentions that they found hypoglycemia, which sometimes is the result of a pregnancy. Surprisingly no pregnancy test was done in a young sexually active (to say the least) woman. Next we are shown her birth control pills on the floor with very few missing. This line of inquiry is not pursued further. Similarly, in an art gallery she sees some works that look similar to the drawings that she had assembled on the walls of her apartmnt as she was pursuing her musical composition in parallel with her sex work activity. Regarding this, when the FBI (is prostitution a Federal offense?) comes to arrest one of her clients she is allowed to walk free. Maybe in Germany where the director is from, but in the great US of A the call girl would have been arrested as well. See more Feb 13, 2020 There is a scene in Purple Rain (all hail the beloved Prince) where he demos music for his love interest, and what he plays sounds like a woman in the throes of ecstasy. He explains that she is crying, and the track is being played in reverse. I thought of that scene with this film. Malorie takes financial matters into her own hands and uses the resulting encounters to further her career. Her artistic choices are... odd, in my opinion, and her resulting work is as well, but it's an interesting journey through the brain of an artist. See more Jan 24, 2020 The acting in this film really sells it. Joslyn Jensen, as music student Malorie, creates a unique portrayal of an artist that must grapple with how she sells herself and her music, and what creates inspiration. The film is beautiful, well shot and edited. It is a subtle character study that is firmly rooted in meaningful topics that are being debated today. See more Jan 18, 2020 The uniquely spellbinding "Her Composition" is a decidedly nuanced and ambitious film, and one that peels back layer upon layer of itself only to somehow expose the true intricacies of the artistically afflicted. Played with a deft hand by Joslyn Jensen, Malorie is a conspicuously talented composition student at a New York art institute. Her personal life craters as the college term ends, leaving her on the hook to submit final work or risk expulsion. Confronted with real-life, real-time needs, Malorie becomes a call girl, and her expanding sense of her own body signals a shift in the film's attentions. Experiential realizations learned while she checks out during encounters bring a clarity to Malorie; soon that detachment gives rise to experientially sensed melodies she then transforms into collage, eventually revealing a full musical mapping of her journey. "Her Composition" is a mesmerizing piece of storytelling – a proposed portrait of the machinations of artistic inspiration, and an angular presentation on artistic and female empowerment. Improbably, this aspirational film achieves every lofty watermark it sets out to reach. - (Was this review of use to you? If so, let me know by clicking "Helpful." Cheers!) See more Oct 23, 2019 I was completely captivated by this film and the lead actress. The concept is so unique - watching her go through the creative process and wondering if it will spiral into madness. The music, the cinematography all came together perfectly. I very much appreciated this piece of art! See more May 29, 2019 fantastic film. made me want to go back and create for a living... See more Read all reviews
