David K @RT61474040 May 26, 2025 During retrospection, it's not difficult to slip into an historical distortion based on our presence in a world that's changed. Watching this movie, I never got the feeling it was anything other than an attempt to fit a 1940's musical into the mid-50's. There, I did it. See more ashley h @ashleyhobgood87 Aug 23, 2020 Hit the Deck is a terrific film. It is about a sailor who tries to save his sister Susan's virtue. Jane Powell and Tony Martin give fantastic performances. The script is good but a little slow in places. Roy Rowland did a great job directing this movie. I enjoyed this motion picture because of the humor and romance. Hit the Deck is a must see. See more Jul 1, 2017 For some odd reason, MGM chose this adaptation of the 1927 stage hit as its final "all-star" musical - only Vic Damone, Russ Tamblyn and Debbie Reynolds would return to the studio for musical roles in the following years. Despite a melodic score ("Hallelujah," "More Than You Know," "I Know That You Know," "Sometimes I'm Happy"), the plot is bland. See more Dec 24, 2016 Not exactly an A list musical from MGM, but an entertaining one with a decent cast and some impressive choreography from Hermes Pan. Russ Tamblyn, Vic Damone and Tony Martin are sailors on shore leave in San Francisco. Martin has been engaged to burlesque dancer Ann Miller for 6 years and she's threatening to leave him unless he marries her. Tamblyn meets young stage actress Debbie Reynolds and romance blooms. Tamblyn also discovers that his younger sister Jane Powell has fallen under the influence of unethical producer Gene Raymond and recruits his buddies to rescue her. The resulting brawl leaves them all wanted and pursued by the shore patrol. It's up to his dad Walter Pidgeon, an admiral, to help them. J. Carroll Naish, Richard Anderson, Jane Darwell and Alan King all appear in supporting roles. The music in this one is just okay, but Tamblyn and Reynolds get two really inventive dance numbers.
