Following his great success with "North by Northwest," director Alfred Hitchcock makes a daring choice for his next project: an adaptation of Robert Bloch's novel "Psycho." When the studio refuses to back the picture, Hitchcock decides to pay for it himself in exchange for a percentage of the profits. His wife, Alma Reville, has serious reservations about the film but supports him nonetheless. Still, the production strains the couple's marriage.

Critics Consensus

Though it suffers from tonal inconsistency and a lack of truly insightful retrospection, Hitchcock is elevated by inspired performances from its two distinguished leads.

Would have been much better off if it had taken a moment to sit down and decide on its own sensibility... It might have settled on the one, and retained its focus. But it didn't, so it doesn't, and it tells us nothing.

If Hitchcock himself was alive today, he'd undoubtedly turn his nose up.

The cod-psychologising is a little clunky but [Helen] Mirren's Mrs Hitch is inspiringly ballsy - with a dollop of the vulnerability that made you sob in The Queen.

The film balances its darkness with its cheekiness extremely well. The drama never swings too deep and the comedy never turns farcical.

The acting is top-notch all around, but Gervasi’s treatment makes one want to pick up a Hitchcock biography instead.

It was a bit disjointed in the plot and Anthony Hopkins did only a fair job of imitating Hitchcock, but it was interesting to get some background information on the making of Psycho.

I thought this was a really solid Hitchcock flick. Not knowing much about who Alfred was, I was pretty intrigued the whole time learning about the making of his thriller masterpiece. I feel like the biggest gripe I have here is that the film is too short. The last third of it just felt a bit rushed. If that was slightly more developed, it would've made the final few moments more exciting. Also, the performances by Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren really excelled.
