Not knowing much about who Alfred was, I was pretty intrigued the whole time learning about the making of his thriller masterpiece. I feel like the biggest gripe I have here is that the film is too short. The last third of it just felt a bit rushed. If that was slightly more developed, it would've made the final few moments more exciting. Also, the performances by Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren really excelled. See more Zach W. @zwreviews Jun 26 Though the cast is extremely talented, Hitchcock feels like a rudimentary biopic that fails to emphasize the more interesting aspects of Alfred Hitchcock’s life, work, and personality. Hitchcock features Anthony Hopkins as the eccentric director and Helen Mirren as his wife Alma Reville. With Hopkins buried an immense amount of make-up and effects, his looks, mannerisms and personality matches that of Alfred Hitchcock. Helen Mirren is fantastic and the depth to her character is one of the more interesting elements to the film. Unfortunately, Hitchcock does not capture the same intensity and suspense as Alfred Hitchcock’s films and instead delivers a predictable biopic. I found the script to be tedious with its overly verbose dialogue and unnecessary comicalness. Though Hopkins and Mirren maximize the script and deliver strong performances, the story feels hindered by an odd tone. Scarlett Johansson is a fun addition as Janet Leigh and Hitchcock does succeed in establishing an interesting story angle with its focus on the production of Psycho. Personally, I wish there was more focus on Hitchcock as a filmmaker and less emphasis on his romantic life or odd qualities. While I understand the importance of including Hitchcock’s obsession with blonde women, the amount of time spent of lesser interesting matters versus the uniqueness of Hitchcock as a filmmaker is disappointing. Overall, Hitchcock is an interesting character study of one of the most infamous directors of all time. With a runtime of just over an hour-and-half, Hitchcock does not feel like a big commitment and does showcase the director in an interesting light (especially for fans of his filmography). Scarlett Johanson was under utilized. The film itself wanted to be good but the direction was all over the place. There are scenes that dont ever come to fruition. They are a bit of a head scratcher. Not sure the point they were trying to make with these odd scenes thrown in with no substance either before or after the scene. Most the scenes that are off involved Hitchcock but was a couple with the female leads as well. It had potential but went to far left of story and had the average viewer asking, what was that about?
