Disney's "Hollywood Stargirl" is a sequel to the 2020 Disney+ film about free spirit Stargirl Caraway (Grace VanderWaal), a silver-voiced teenager whose simple acts of kindness work magic in the lives of others. The upcoming film follows Stargirl's journey out of Mica, Arizona and into a bigger world of music, dreams and possibilities. When her mother Ana (Judy Greer) is hired as the costume designer on a movie, they relocate to L.A., where Stargirl quickly becomes involved with an eclectic assortment of characters. They include aspiring filmmaking brothers Evan (Elijah Richardson) and Terrell (Tyrel Jackson Williams); Mr. Mitchell (Judd Hirsch), one of Stargirl's neighbors; and Roxanne Martel (Uma Thurman), a musician Stargirl admires and encounters on her journey.

Grace VanderWaal returns as the infectiously sweet singer, now starstruck and lovestruck.

As with “Stargirl,” there’s a bone-deep decency to this sequel that’s pretty disarming.

A suitably quirky and sweet sequel that builds on the Stargirl mythos with nothing but good intentions.

Let’s be honest: no one asked for Hollywood Stargirl. The first film had very little emotional attachment and depth to hold the audience’s interest, and the same can be said for the sequel.

A huge improvement over the original film. Shows a teen character with warmth and humanity.

A charming and wholesome movie boasting gorgeous singing and hummable songs. Grace VanderWaal is a charismatic protagonist who looks lovely and sounds even better.

It’s nice that they break all the mystery around Stargirl just to know that she’s just one simply talented young girl. Kind of like it.

Uma sequela desnecessária que sabota a própria essência da protagonista, transformando o seu carisma peculiar num drama adolescente convencional da Disney.

May not be wondrously fresh like before, but this original sequel exploratively treats the young, cheerful heroine as her own chapter surrounded by a remarkable cast contributing to the familiarly artistic heartening resonance as thematic alignment. (B+)

Grace VanderWaal is the perfect fit for this movie. Although made by a Disney affiliate it feels like a well made indie.

I rewatched this and it really holds up. I enjoyed her journey from a lonely child dependent on her mother (who is busy and stressed at work) to a young woman who is building a future in the world and able to support her mother as an equal. The songs Love and Mercy and Dreaming are my favourites but all the songs are great.

I know: it's just a feel good Disney movie with great music. But isn't that what movie magic is about? It's not all about reality or action. It's about how some people actually make it, without extravagance, but dedicated love for what they do. Didn't know there was a previous movie to that, though apparently this 2nd one was actually stronger than the 1st.
