Critics Consensus

Featuring lots of guts and gore, Hostel is a wildly entertaining corpse-filled journey -- assuming one is entertained by corpses, guts, and gore, that is.

Whether or not this kind of horror movie is your cup of tea, you have to at least admire Roth for the daring and creativity with which he illustrates that concept.

The first act's filler, otherwise it's a squirmer. Bring a bucket.

It’s definitely exploitative. From the generous heaping of bare tits, to the sinkfuls of mangled limbs, it’s not purporting to be high art. However... it does take extra care into providing a framework for these exploitative elements to exist believably.

Inelegant, schlocky, and full-on? Sure. But it’s also a relentless B-movie hitting your nerves with a blood-soaked meat pounder.

This movie is rough all around. The gore was well done and was something different we hadn't seen before in a horror film.

I enjoyed rewatching this in theaters. I’ve always found it underrated in the horror conversations. A lot of horror fans don’t seem to like Eli Roth’s work but I think this one is a solid entry not to be taken so seriously.

The idea of rich tourists paying to murder victims is genuinely terrifying, and the bleak European setting builds great initial tension. But once the torture starts, it drops all mystery for pure, stomach-churning gore. The characters are paper-thin slasher clichés, making it hard to care. It certainly leaves an impression, but as a film, it relies far too heavily on cheap shock tactics.
