Critics Consensus

House of Darkness finds writer-director Neil LaBute just as acerbic as ever, although he's made more compelling statements on sexual mores.

This feels like something LaBute wrote in an afternoon on the notes app on his smartphone while thinking about something else. Go to Full Review

While the material here is thin and largely predictable (aside from one great jump scare), the cast is outstanding and the dialogue is snappy, delivered at a brisk pace. Go to Full Review

An intriguing and occasionally quite witty battle of the sexes, in which not all of the bloodshed is strictly metaphorical. Go to Full Review

For LaBute, the successful film not only contains some genuinely scare sequences and crescendos in suburb fashion. It’s a masterful use of narrative, dialogue, and tension. Go to Full Review

House of Darkness isn’t a masterpiece by any stretch but it is still a good story worthy of being experienced fresh for the first time. Go to Full Review

The verbal jousting and escalating antagonism between Long and Bosworth is frequently hampered by clunky, unconvincing dialogue that never quite gives the narrative the momentum it needs. Go to Full Review

Sam 09/23/2022 Movie sucked ass, just a guy being awkward for an hour and a half See more anonymous 09/12/2022 waste of time and money See more Chas 09/10/2022 Overall this movie was just awful. See more Nicholas J @NickJunes Jan 21 The man the protagonist is based on does not exist. It’s like a 12-year-old girl wrote a caricature of a man. In my 45 years of life I have never met a man like this. There’s no way a man like this would even get married. At times he acts like getting laid is really important and other times he acts like it’s not. Sometimes he respects women and sometimes he doesn’t. His character is incredibly inconsistent. If he actually acted this way in real life nobody could bear to be around him. He appears to be in some kind of sales or consultant job which makes his personality even more unbelievable. No one could be as socially awkward as this man and hold a professional career. He is like a child. This is what makes it so hard to believe. The premise of the movie is good but the writing and the lead male character is not believable. He’s like an annoying virgin yet he’s fine with being incredibly aggressive... He makes no sense. See more P-Funk @PFunk69 Jan 16 Pretty bad. Naming your characters Mina and Lucy is just too obvious as to where this is going. You basically knew they were vampires within 1 second. For all the tension the payoff ending was so predictable and boring. And no explanation of the whole dream sequence like was it real or what? It didn’t make sense. I love vampire movies of all kinds ss and this was just not worth it. See more Claudio C @Claudio666 Jan 12 Too Talkative (12,195 – 11 Jan 2026 – Claudio Carvalho) After meeting Mina (Kate Bosworth) in a bar, Hap (Justin Long) gives a ride to her since she lives in the countryside with the intention of getting into her pants. Mina lives in an old castle and Hap learns that she is rich. While she is preparing a drink for them, he calls his friend to tell him that he is getting along with her. They have a small talk and make out, but when their intimacy increases, Mia’s sister Lucy (Gia Crovatin) appears in the room. Soon Hap learns that his night will not be the way he planned. "House of Darkness" (2022) is a too talkative horror movie in the style of a play or a stretched episode of "Tales from the Crypt" since the story is too short. Kate Bosworth is beautiful and seductive like in the old times. However, the plot is predictable without sexual tension and nothing different happens despite the good work of the cast. My vote is six. Title (Brazil): "Encontro Macabro" ("Macabre Date") See more Read all reviews
