nikox 09/01/2024 greatest movie of all time I love love it love it love it, if this movie was a woman, or a man i don't care, I would smash so fast but alas tis not See more 05/02/2021 Interesting film about a beautiful 17 year old girl from an Icelandic village who decides she must come to California. Having had an Icelandic Great Grandmother who lived in a similar area hop on her horse and ride to Reykjavik in the 19th century I could see how this 21st century film picks up on the theme of brave Icelandic women determined to fulfill their destiny. There is much more here though as Sigga is also determined to become a poet and is accompanied on here journey by a group of faithful friends and a magical canoe named "Topanga." Appropriately, Judd Nelson of "The Breakfast Club" plays the role of a poetry teacher who helps this quirky ensemble of young people along the way. However, there is danger in the big city of Reykjavik in the form of an unprincipled suitor and a drug culture which has already destroyed the idealistic dreams of many. Yet, through her adventures and sufferings, Sigga begins to see the true nature of life and is finally able to become a poet. Being a writer and publisher of Icelandic stories myself I loved the film and felt it was a perfect blend of the traditional Icelandic cultural theme of a determined woman meeting the rather complicated and confused modern world and proving, with the help of some quirky friends and a magical canoe, every bit ready for the task!
