Adam (Anthony Mackie) and Jane (Zoë Chao) are three years into a NASA mission that has gone very wrong: Their ship is broken and drifting between Jupiter and Saturn. Finding ways to pass the time as they become certain that no one is coming to save them, they argue over what to do. One day, Adam poses that maybe they should sleep together; Jane laughs the idea off, but it prompts a flirty debate about whether they're better off spending their remaining days as friends or something more.

Critics Consensus

The charmingly lo-fi If You Were the Last relies on the chemistry of its starring duo to fuel its emotionally driven sci-fi story.

“If You Were the Last” is game for fluffy rom-com-like tension, but it fears its own premise. What a missed opportunity. Go to Full Review Amy Nicholson Variety Mar 12, 2023

A romantic comedy that revives the screwball formula where two people talk themselves silly — and we only had to go to the end of the solar system to make it happen. Go to Full Review Jordan Mintzer The Hollywood Reporter Mar 12, 2023
Sappy and, in terms of its comedy, rather cringe-worthy, never quite finding the sweet spot between romance and laughs. Go to Full Review Joseph Tomastik Loud and Clear Reviews Nov 21, 2024

If You Were the Last may feature uneven humor and characterizations, but its third act provides a perfect landing that makes the shaky flight worthwhile. Go to Full Review Katie Hogan She Likes Movies Nov 13, 2024
If You Were The Last is essentially a sweet story set against an incredible background, two people against the universe, and at one point Benson. Go to Full Review Calum Baker Radio Times Aug 17, 2024

Some lovingly hand-crafted production design - somewhere between Stanley Kubrick and Wes Anderson - contributes to the film's easy-going but sincere vibe. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Thomas N @RT68335728 19 hrs ago So bad. I did't make it past the first 5 minutes. See more Treanna T @RT01966180 Sep 6, 2026 Couldnt finish this movie. It was glorified cheating. See more Jim P @RT08384096 May 15, 2026 Definately NOT Sci-Fi! In fact the start is so bad that I switched off after 20 minutes... However, I tried again. It's a corny rom com but the acting is pretty good. See more Andy M @RT08914307 May 9, 2026 It’s not Sci-Fi. It’s set on a space shuttle, but the set makes no sense. Normal fitted kitchen, bathroom with tiles, a living room with a sofa, gravity somehow exists etc nothing about it is Sci-fi, except the use of "marooned in space" as the catalyst for the plot. It’s a Rom-Com. It’s not a bad plot if you abandon any thoughts about it being science fiction. See more Kevin H @RT78065875 Mar 31, 2026 Sweet little film. I came across it by accident and was pleasantly surprised. See more Steven t @SST609 Nov 16, 2025 Dumb and cute. Not my style of movie but I needed something I would not have to think about so I put this on. See more Read all reviews
