Critics Consensus

A classic Tarantino genre-blending thrill ride, Inglourious Basterds is violent, unrestrained, and thoroughly entertaining.

It wasn't satisfying... Perhaps I'll change my mind. Perhaps I won't. But today I'll simply say that I thought it was inglorious indeed.

When Tarantino sent this message to moviegoers in 2009, it's unlikely that he imagined how relevant it would be in 2019.

The performance of Christoph Waltz, playing the Nazi Gestapo figure Col. Hans Landa, is the highlight of the film. His ability to convey courtliness and sympathy and then go to commit the cruelest of horrors is simply superb.

“Inglourious Basterds” cemented itself into not only an important project in Tarantino’s filmography but also into the mythmaking of his presence in contemporary American filmmaking as a whole.

It is his first film where the bad, underwhelming points outweigh the good – and his first that cannot be recommended easily.

I liked the historical background and the twist on historical facts with the taking out of Hitler and other Nazis.

Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds unfolds across five chapters, each dripping with dread. The opening farmhouse scene—Colonel Hans Landa's interrogation of a French dairy farmer—remains one of cinema's most nerve-shredding sequences, establishing Christoph Waltz as a revelation. Brad Pitt's Aldo Raine leads a band of Jewish-American soldiers whose sole purpose is terrorising Nazis. Yet the Basterds are almost a sideshow; the film's beating heart lies in Shosanna Dreyfus, a Jewish cinema owner plotting her own revenge. Tarantino's love letter to cinema runs throughout—the nitrate film stock, the propaganda premiere, the power of projected image as weapon. It's a film about films as much as it is about war. The violence is cartoonish, the dialogue indulgent, the historical revisionism gleeful. None of it should work. All of it does. A riotous, audacious piece of filmmaking that remains one of Tarantino's finest and in my opinion, one the best films ever.

Still outstanding after all these years, even on our fourth viewing. Christoph Waltz is amazing, and Tarantino somehow makes long stretches of dialogue as tense as the action. It is violent, but the acting, cinematography, humor, and sheer invention make it work for us. The music, often reminiscent of Ennio Morricone, is essential and sets the tone beautifully. Even at 2½ hours, it never felt too long.
